Title: How about more keyboard shortcuts?
Post by: olyar15 on April 26, 2003, 05:44:29 pm
I currently own version 8 and am thinking about buying MC 9.  However, I wish there were more keyboard shortcuts.  I find the interface to be too mouse-centric.  I am using this on a HTPC, so I would like to control MC via a remote control/Girder, but I find that I still need to use the mouse for anything other than basic playback.  More keyboard controls / shortcuts would be much appreciated.

An example of an excellent mouseless interface is Theatertek DVD program.  Can be operated completely by keyboard/remote control.

The latest beta (v161) includes a GML/CCF combination with a few hundred commands.... It might suit your needs. I find I only need to use the mouse when doing heavy tagging or burning CDs. Day-to-day searches & operation work great via remote control!

Best,

How does that help with more keyboard shortcuts?

Well, the OP also mentioned Girder/Remote control, so the GML file is a natural thing to use if Girder is a possibility. Anyway, Girder can accept events other than IR signals as triggers for commands--like keypresses. Girder can be a massive overkill method of remapping all the MCC commands to different keystrokes...

Best,

I agree that MC9 is too mouse-centric. You can't even tab to the track list. Girder's very nice (I use it for my remote) but it is overkill and too complicated for most users.
I say, confiscate the mice from all the computers at J River's for a day. Most software (with obvious exceptions, like paint or 3D packages) is still usable, albeit a bit more clumsy. MC9 becomes completely impossible.
I find this particularly an issue on my laptops. Touchpads are horrible things and MJ8 allowed me to get by almost entirely without using it.

Therein lies one huge strength of Winamp: Wide-ranging plug-in support.  I run, among others, a hotkey plug-in for Winamp 2.  It really makes switching between songs, and adjusting the volume, much easier.
