Title: In Theater mode, video preview window steals focus from keyboard and or remote.
Post by: Belarathon on April 19, 2020, 09:10:02 am
Greetings:

Over the last few weeks, I've installed Media Center on a number of distros, including Manjaro, MX, K/L/Ubuntu and Mint.
Once I ditched integrated graphics for a dedicated card, it turned out to be an experience comparable to the performance I enjoy in the Windows environment.  However, there's been a recurring theme in each installation:  Let's say you're in theater mode, watching a video, and you hit the back button to return to the prior screen, listing any number of videos:  Once the playing now screen goes the the previous screen, there's a small video preview screen in the upper right corner, and it steals focus from both my remote, and the PC keyboard.  One must use a mouse to get focus off of it.  I couldn't get a screenshot of the bug, but the screen shows two items focused in this situation - both the video that was just viewed, and the small preview screen. You can tell they are both focused because there is a pane of faux glass (Obsidian theme) surrounding both items.  In frustration, I finally restored my Windows installation, and in  Windows, the preview does not steal focus. Kind of a deal breaker for me and Linux, and i really do want to make the switch.

Recommendations?

Literally nobody has encountered this?  I navigate to a place that I simply can't get out of without a mouse.  Is no one else using Media Center in Linux as a "ten-foot" interface?  Would it be possible for me to edit the skin to not show the preview window?

It might depend on the desktop environment you're using (e.g. GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce, etc.). I know there were focus issues with KDE Plasma in the past.

It wasn't the desktop environment; it was the distro!  I recall reading that Media Center was developed and tested using Debian, so I installed Buster this evening.  Low and behold, the issue is gone.  All Debian based distros had the issue, except Debian.

Correction:  It seems to have been Wine.  I installed it on Debian and focus was being stolen again. Uninstalled it, and all was fine.  At least, that seems to be the case.

Nah, that wasn't it. It seems to be a hit and miss thing.  As a workaround, I have toggled to a different list view, that of the flying horizontal thumbnails.  Not as useful as the other view, but certainly is impressive to see.

Trying to reproduce this, how do you go "back"? Can this be done with a keyboard? I hit the back arrow and it just goes back in the movie.
If I can get the window to show up like you do I have an idea about what's going on.
