Title: Media Server is showing up when software is not opened and set to 'do nothing'
Post by: battlescarze on May 01, 2020, 01:54:33 pm
Good day, I run JRiver on my laptop and desktop at home.  Both are the latest builds and use Win10 but my laptop seems to be showing up on my TV that the Media Server is running.  I have set this to 'do nothing' in the startup AND the software is not open on my laptop?

Any suggestions why this would be?  I guess I could delete the program and see if that sorts things out but seems strange and a little concerning.

There are no other users on either PC than myself.

I uninstalled JRiver completely from my laptop and it still shows up as a media server?  I checked the hidden ProgramData folder to see if there are any files or folders but I do not see anything pertaining to JRiver...does anyone have any suggestions?

It takes a little while for DLNA device lists to refresh. If you had rebooted your TV it would probably have stopped showing the Media Server. Depends on the TV.

Of course, that assumes that the Media Server showing up on the TV was the JRiver Media Server, and not some other server such as the Windows 10 built-in server.

If it is the JRiver Media Server, it will show in the System Tray with the name and an icon that includes a smaller version of the JRiver icon.

It would seem that some Windows 10 Media Server components were turned on, but the WIN10 media server itself was not on?  I went to the advanced settings and found that JRiver had been set to allow likely during installation.

See attached, my streaming options for the built in WIN10 server were not on.  I turned them on briefly and then set to block ALL, only after I did this JRiver stopped showing up on my TV.  JRiver must turn on some of these components when installed, but does not do the reverse up removal.

I suspect that Windows just got the naming of the media server wrong... or in the time you did your investigation your TV dropped JRiver as an available media server. Some TVs seem to store the names of all servers they have seen until they are removed or maybe the TV has been rebooted.

But it sounds like all is good now.
