What I'm trying to do:
Make a view scheme using Sort criteria
What's going wrong:
Cannot force [autoalbumartist] to be the primary sort filter
What I tried so far:
[album],[autoalbumartist]
[autoalbumartist],[album]
What could be the problem:
I do not have Album Artist as a visible column - I don't want or need to see it, just to use it.
Any and all help is appreciated.

How about turning on the Save Sort feature, set it how you want it and then turn it back off again??

That's just it - I can't get it to sort the way that I want, ever.
Using [autoalbumartist] in the sort gets very close now that album tracks are auto-arranged. All artist's works are together with albums sorted and tracks listed in proper order. All compilations (which have Album Artist tags) are likewise kept in proper order.
The only nagging issue is with singles - songs with no Album tag. Example:
I have a bunch of songs from The Jesus and Mary Chain, most of which have album tags. But some are singles with no album tag. The singles are interspersed among the albums instead of bunched together. I have not yet figured out what, if any, logic dictates their placement in the list.
Not exactly a show-stopper but it's frustrating to be so close to what I want and not be able to use logic to solve the problem.

Can you not just use the Single name in the Album tag? That is what I do eg Marilyn Manson Beautiful People Single - Album Tag = "Beautiful People Single"

Ive just had another idea. If you create a custom field which denotes whether or not something is an album or single and then sort on this field in your sort criteria. Tat way all albums will appear together and all Singles will appear together...

Auto album artist is a calculated field -- sort of a special case. (there are a few others as well)
They can't be shown as columns or used as sort keys in 9.0.
Lots of people have suggested fancy handling of calculated fields for a future version, so it may happen.

NoCodeUK - thanks for the thought and the effort. I was hoping to make it act logically without retagging or setting up custom fields - that would be me working for the program, not the program working for me. As I mentioned, it's not a show-stopper, it's just something that will gnaw at me for every single second that I use MC until I finally lose my mind ;)
Matt - if [autoalbumartist] is not supposed to work as a sort key, then why does it work at all? I'm not trying to be a smart*ss, but sincerely interested. Here's the view scheme I built to get nearly what I want:
Media Type: audio
Genre / Album Artist (auto) / Album
Search Criteria: Sort: [autoalbumartist]
Please do not tell me "Thanks, that's a bug and we'll remove that capability right away!" because I will be stuck on an old build of MC for the forseeable future ;D
