My hardware:
MC running on Win 10 desktop PC.
USB output to SPDIF optical.
Cambridge Audio DAC.
JRemote on a Samsung tablet.
On occasions I turn on the DAC, go to use JRemote (usually already loaded from a previous time), but MC crashes and needs restarting.

It sounds like you are NOT using DLNA; why do you mention it?
-
Are you by chance using a Bitdefender antivirus application on your Windows PC?

I'm not using Bitdefender, I have Mcafee Internet Security. I've set MC to be ignored in the firewall which has caused problems in the past. I've read about the Bitdefender issues maybe Mcafee is also causing this.

I mention it as I thought JRemote worked over DLNA, the app descriptions says..
DLNA and zones
Use JRemote to control all your DLNA supported devices. Any device supported in MC can be controlled from JRemote by switching to that specific zone.
You can link and unlink zone for multi-room playback.
Unless there's something I missunderstood?.
Why do you think I'm not using DLNA?.

JRemote controlling MediaCenter itself does not use DLNA. If there were DLNA Zones that MC was streaming to then you could use JRemote to control this playback too, this is what the quote you posted is saying.
Because your DAC is directly connected to your PC via USB/Optic cable, as opposed to a network connection, you won’t be using DLNA to communicate with this device. So neither will JRemote.
Cheers

Thanks for the explanation, should I post this problem somewhere else?

I would upgrade to the latest MC version and try again, if you're still experiencing issues I would go to the MC26 Windows thread.
Cheers
