Title: SOLVED: UI (Audio) keeps moving on me...
Post by: ssands on June 21, 2020, 05:20:13 pm
Hi,
I've noticed this for awhile, but it's been bugging me.
I typically like to browse and scroll thru my music in an Artist view (slightly modified by me to sort by last name but show as FirstName LastName).
As I scroll, I come to a place where I want to go click on an artist and check out the albums available and select one to play.
As soon as I move my pointer off the scroll bar, the UI shifts position, and sometimes keeps doing that as I move the pointer further.
(I mainly use the Trackpad for moving the pointer).
Any ideas on how to make this stop and have the UI stay where I've positioned it?

I think you may have locked your mouse into scroll mode. Why not set up a a panes view of Artists>Albums. That wouy;d make your selection process a lot easier,

Hit the Esc key.

Hit the Esc key.
Doesn't change the behavior.
I reproduce with both trackpad and ext. mouse.
Seems that the UI "scrolls" whenever I move the mouse from outside the window to in the window (no mouse press).
But happens even if I just move the cursor from the scroll bar onto the windows with the albums.

That sounds like a mouse problem.  If you have Logitech software installed, try uninstalling it.

Completely uninstalled Logitech Software and unplugged the USB receiver, so no Logitech connection at all.
No change.
Also, turned off all Trackpad settings for momentum, etc.
UI keeps moving as before.

Follow-up:
It occurs just my moving the mouse across the right scroll bar.
Happens with no Logitech software (or hardware installed/connected).
Also, happens using Trackpad. Same behavior.
Appears that the scrollbar is picking up the mouse movement across it.
No movement happens if I move the cursor within the window, only when it crosses the scrollbar.
Enlarge Scrollbar on mouseover setting does not have an effect.

One more observation:
Does not happen in every view. Album View does not exhibit this behavior.
Movie view does (not sure if I've modified this one or not).
The view in Audio (which I use all the time) is definitely a custom view I've set up. Can't think of what setting would cause the movement of the window contents though.

There was a Win10 update causing similar problems where the scrollbar would scroll just by hoovering. In this case, the problem would show itself in all apps, not just MC.
Anyway, check if this is the case with you - make sure your Win10 is updated.

This is HW issue, are you using (Thinkpad) laptop?
This obviously not a JRiver issue.

Buy an external mouse (Logitech is fine)

Thanks for your reply, but I don't believe this is the case at all. And certainly not "obvious".
If you look at the above comments, you'll see that it happens both with a trackpad and a logitech mouse. It happens when logitech h/w and s/w are removed from the system. I am on an MSI system with a synaptics trackpad, but again, it happens with an external mouse.
It only happens in JRiver - not in any other app.
Also, it only seems to happen on views that have been customized - I don't know if that is for every customized view or only some.

It doesn't happen in any of my customised views, so I can't see it being a JRiver problem. I don't think there is a setting in MC to make scrolling automatic. It is likely that a windows setting or a hardware problem is causing the automatic scrolling you see.

Here's what I have tried to debug this issue. None of these efforts has fixed the problem.
This happens when I move the cursor across the right scroll bar from outside the window to inside and vice versa.
Any ideas???

Sounds like something is interfering with MC mouse handling. Try resetting windows DPI settings to 100% (no scaling) and check if any accessibility setting is enabled. Also try closing all applications that show up in system tray, and, if you know what they are, also kill other non-critical processes using Task Manager.

A quick Google search finds many people with similar problems:
https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/uncontrollable-scrolling-on-windows-10/

Nvidia drivers, Wacom tablet service, synaptic drivers, etc.

Also try disabling your trackpad/laptop mousepad.
If you have a Lenovo laptop with those red mouse things in the middle of the keyboard, also try disabling that.

Thanks @zybex.
I'm running at dpi = 100%.
No Accessibility settings.
I've got an Nvidia GTX970M and a Synaptics trackpad.
Disabling the trackpad didn't affect the problem.
Turning off all the items in System Tray didn't affect the problem either.
I don't have the little Thinkpad eraser pointer thingee.
JRiver MC is the only app this happens in.
It makes me wonder what messages MC is acting on when that cursor moves into and out of focus on the right scrollbar.
If I sweep the cursor into and out of the window from the left hand side, the UI doesn't scroll.
If I sweep in and out from any direction without crossing the right scrollbar, the UI is stationary.
It only happens as the cursor crosses the scrollbar.

Did you also unplug the logitech mouse dongle?

I'm out of ideas. It has to be some driver generating the messages that MC handles (and MC does probably handle many non-standard mouse/media messages that other apps ignore, so that would explain why you only see it in MC). Last shot: go through your running Services and stop things that don't belong to windows.

PS: as others have said above, it could also be an hardware issue with the keyboard or trackpad. One way to validate this is to reinstall the entire OS without anything else on top and then try MC. Or boot to a live WinPE, but I don't know if MC runs on that.

MC is pretty standard  in its handling of the mouse.  This problem has to be somewhere else or we'd be seeing lots of similar problems.

Driver or OS.  Odds are on the driver.

Try installing the 32 bit version of MC.

Turn the keyboard upside down and whack it.  Food / stuck key.

Try a different keyboard and mouse.

If it's a driver, then it's a pretty low-level one, as the same behavior occurs across 3 different pieces of hardware: synaptics touchpad, logitech wireless mouse, and Dell usb mouse.
I ran SFC and it reported that everything was fine.
I'm not sure what would be happening at the OS level that would do this, as that should be the same base as everyone else on the current version of Windows (havent upgraded to 2004 yet).
And it doesnt happen on any other app.
It seems that the scroll bar is picking up the mouse-over event and acting on it.
Since there is a setting to enlarge scrollbar on mouseover, I wonder if something is happening there

Did you try the 32 bit version of MC?

Not yet. I wont be able to try that until tonight. Do I need to uninstall the 64bit version or can they both be installed?

Hi Jim,
I tried the 32-bit Stable version and can confirm that I see the same issue.

Another interesting observation:
The same behavior happens in the "Add Library View" Window. Exact same behavior.
However, if I move the cursor over the scrollbar of the window showing the "Playing Now", "Audio", "Video", etc items, the behavior does not happen.
Might it depend on the type of window (or Child Window)?

Another Observation:
As I adjust the sizing slider at the top right I observe:
If there are 4 item groupings (or less) across, it happens.
5 item groupings or more across: it doesn't happen.
It's a little tricky...it seemed there was one setting that had 4 item groupings, where it didn't happen, but I was not able to get back to that setting.
Note that this jives with the comment above about the "Add Library View" which always shows 3 items across.

Ssands, you'll to happy to know that I've reproduced your issue :)
I've attached a video showing the issue - the forum doesn't accept .mp4/m4v, so I had to zip it. Sorry about the quality, but there's a 3 MB size limit.

It happens only when the "enlarge scrollbars on mouse hover" is enabled. If we hover and the toolbar is enlarged, the view scrolls up a bit; if we move the mouse a bit faster and the scrollbar is not enlarged, the view still moves, as JRiver probably recalculates the available horizontal space anyway and readjusts the view.

I agree now that this is clearly an MC bug when that option is on, probably caused by the slight reduction of horizontal space needed to draw the wider scrollbar on hover.

PS: @Jim, since the forum accepts .mpg, could you also enable .mp4/m4v/avi/mkv ?

Thanks for the details and the video.

I'm working on a fix for the next build.

Thanks again.

@zybex: Thanks for pursuing this! I really appreciate it. The video you uploaded is exactly what I see.
However, it did happen whether Enlarge Scrollbar was turned on -or- off, but one thing I didn't try was exiting and restarting MC after flipping that toggle.
Thanks @Matt for getting on it too.

@Matt: Confirming that the 26.0.95 64-bit build solves the issue!
Thanks so much for the fast response.
