I was using media center 9.0.88 without problems.
Yesterday I downloaded 9.0.53. It installed fine (over 9.0.88), worked fine. I am a registered user.
This morning, I pop in a cd, let it access the internet database, it works fine. When I went to rip the cd, MC froze.
I left it alone for a minute, then ctrl+alt+del.
Started it again...same problem.
Another ctrl+alt+del. I goto explorer and I notice my cd rom drives are gone. I open manager, and sure enough...under disk management, there are no cd drives.
I reboot. Same error. I uninstall MC 9.053 and clean my registry. I download and install 9.0.54 and I get the same problem.
Right now I am without Media Center 9. I should like to begin usiong it again, but this problem is more than a little annoying. I would like to add to my database.
I have used this program for a while and I like it. Never saw this error, or any before. My box is tight...winnt2k, sp3, 256k ram, amd 2000+....blah, blah, blah. I don't ever get errors.
Any thoughts?

Normaly Windows Will Remove A Drive When It Thinks There Is A problem.
Do Not Just Reboot.
Do A Complete Shut Down.
Leave The Computer Off For 10-15 Seconds then hit the power switch and reboot the computer.
before loading any programs go to windows Explorer or My computer and see if tthe drive is listed.
If Not i hope you have long finger nails.
If it is listed load up MC9
when you load it up go to Options "Cd Writer" the press the detect button.
report back if it works or not.
you can post your system info from "help" System info the post it into your next message.

Thanks for your response. I'll lurk.
OK...I just started all over again...installed 1.53.
Same error.
Yes, my cd drives were listed in Explorer before I started the program. Yes, I did a complete shutdown.
Yes I "detected", even though it was already listed...
I just tried to rip a cd...locked on Initializing.
Cd rom drives were "removed" as in removed like my digital camera when I shut it off. This should not be happening.

maybe JohnT (J River CD Burner Programer) can help you or someone else with the same type drives.
-
I installed 1.55.
Would've been nice if that problem didn't resurface...but it did.

So, no matter what I do, MC strips my cd drives from windows. I read the thread asking if folks think MC 9 is ready for gold...I gotta say, this error on my box alone should be sending red flags up. Some other reported errors are also of concern.
As it is now, I am using CDEX 1.50 b9 for ripping cd's.
I'm not happy about losing functionality from a program I paid for. CDEX is a fine program, and I'm happy for it, but I didn't pay for it.
I am thinking the error caused using MC 9 on my box has been seen before. Perhaps someone concerned with the beta status of this appy could address my little problem.
My original thought to the error was that my box ran hot. (62° C) but I got the temp to idle at 42.
I've run the same appys on my box for years. There have never been conflicts before, no reason to expect it now. My box is all updated and solid. I just built the current incarnation <1 month ago. again, with beta 9.088 version running mint.
Well, here's hoping for some assistance on the matter.
Thanks in advance
Brian

Did you try the "detect" option in the CD settings?
-
I never had to do that before, and even thought my cd drive was listed in the appropriate spot, I did choose "detect" for one or 2 installations.

Are you using Easy Cd Creator?
I had that problem after uninstalling Easy Cd Destroyer 5 Plutonium and reinstalling didn't fix it. Anything that accessed the CD drives hung up and either required a reboot to recover or eventually came back with no CDs listed.
That's been a while ago but there is tech bulletin on the Roxio site. An obscure drive parameter had to be manually pruned from the registry.
-
No.
running list:
This situation existed before and after installation of cpuidle pro.
Eerything else (firewall, etc) was running when I ran 9.0.88 version MC9.

Easy Cd Destroyer 5 Plutonium
hehehe
LMAO, but you are correct
waste of money for sure, Nero is much better
-
It wasn't necessary for MC 9.0.88 (b), nor was it necessary for cdex or any other ripper I had used, but last night after I installed the 1.56 version, and it kept crashing...I reinstalled 1.55, then ASPI, and now I can rip cd's using MC9 (1.55).
Problem solved...using external lame.exe 3.88
Looking forward to Gold being stable.

I think JohnT said you do not need ASPI any longer.
I am not sure if that is still true.
-
Media Center does not need ASPI installed.
-
Yeah??? Tell that to my box.
-
That's really strange, since MC doesn't use ASPI at all on Win2K. The only thing I can think of is that there was something unusual in the hardware section of the registry that was fixed during installation of the ASPI layer. I wish I knew what it was though...
If you come across any more information on this issue, please let us know.
Thanks,
John T.
