Title: MC 26 constantly freezing - possibly av problems??
Post by: gtandzi on July 10, 2020, 08:50:40 pm
I have the latest update (26.0.98 atm) running on a powerful computer running Windows 10 64 bit, and it constantly freezes. I turned on logging and include the latest LOG files. Any thoughts? I do have BitDefender AV - I see that this created problems in the past, though I don't see any recent messages about that.

Try uninstalling Bitdefender. Read the topic on Windows Defender.

Tried turning off all Bitdefender modules. Still freezes (though perhaps not as often - how do you tell when it's random and intermittent?)

Unfortunately there's no crash dump with your logs.  Please post again if you get one.

It looks like it was looking at files on Z:\, so you could try turning off auto-import and see if that helps.

I use BitDefender with no problem ... you need to add exceptions for MC executables ... i exclude MC from all protections that BitDefender has

EDIT: also exlude media folders from scabs ... especually on access/demand scans

Strangely, I use JRiver on three different computers and only have problems on one of them.

The one I have problems with has two different libraries: one refers to an internal HDD, and the other to a NAS (WD MYCloud). I keep the libraries on that computer separate as the internal HDD is my entire music collection converted for my SONOS system, which can't play hi-rez files; and the NAS is a curated subset of that music for the SONOS system to access without turning the computer on, and is a subset of my entire collection because I have too many files for the database in the SONOS system to cope with.

In Bitdefender I have excluded JRiver MC26 from the work profile, and excluded media files from Scans (I presume you meant that rather than scabs); and I have turned off automatic updating in JRiver.

But still it constantly freezes.

Weird huh?

PS for Matt - I did originally post crash dump zip files, and can re-post if it's useful next time I'm at that computer.

See attached for my settings

... so i excluded my media drives from "on access" and "on demand" scans
... i excluded ALL executables in MC installation folder (screenshot only show few ... but all executables in MC are excluded)

... and i disable NAS scans on connection too

Do you spin your HDD down ... if yes ... spinning them up can cause freezes

Thanks. I'll give that a try - I only had the MC itself excluded.

Defense against antivirus software has become steadily more difficult for everyone.

Followed your rules and so far so good. Plus I let BitDefender know that this appeared to be the solution in case anyone else had the same problems.

Thanks for your help.

I actually made these setting since I start using BitDefender around 5 years ago ... did not change anything since (except redo exclusion of all MC executables when new major version comes out)

It is difficult,if you dont know what to do ... but once done, did not have to add anything new
