Title: MC freezes reliably
Post by: terri ball on August 10, 2020, 02:59:00 am
Recent upgrade install from V23 to V26. MC doesn't seem to be able to complete auto-import.
App freezes  after a couple of minutes.

Where do I upload logs?

Going up major version require you to apply whatever exception in antivirus you have done for MC23 to MC26

Have you done that?

Let it run.   Windows can sometimes be unresponsive when it's really busy.

Are the files on a NAS or local?  USB drive?

Only running Defender (Win10). There are inbound rules for MC 21 and MC 23, but not for MC 26.
Then there is a bunch of outbound rules for MC extenders, without version nos.
No idea how to fix this really.

Yeah, that crossed my mind. However, there is zero disk activity in Resource Monitor, with 20-30% CPU load.

All music files are on local storage.

You might wait a good while and see if it comes back after while or after it finishes importing. If it's all audio files and you have audio analysis enabled when auto-importing, that could potentially cause things like this too.

No analysis enabled, but I'll give it a try and let it run overnight.

On first startup it seems MC 26 started importing, although there were no file locations defined.
After I configured auto-import by adding file locations the problem started, I think.

All tasks in auto-import are unchecked, except for "update for external changes"

I might have been editing files in Foobar while MC was running, could that trip it up?

I could be wrong here as I think the database format changed between v23 and v26, but if you restore the v23 library in v26 you may not need to run auto-import.

v26 will run the analysis task in the background unless you tell it not to. It's possible the analysis is causing the problem.

I have a hunch that it was trawling along happily until I added watch folders.
I added them because i saw it was looking all over the place for media files.
I thought it strange there were no watch folders, shouldn't this be a setting taken from v23?

if you restore the v23 library in v26 you may not need to run auto-import.

I would need a bit more guidance on how that would work, I'm a newby. Even though I was on v23 I never used MC much (and it doesn't look like I'll be using v26 much either).

I told it not to.

OK, I did leave it alone and it does come back. Like it needs 50 minutes from clicking on the close button to actual exit.

All the time near 30% CPU load (also before I clicked to close). Whatever it is doing, it is not processing any audio files as far as I can see in terms of Disk Activity.
Also not much going on in the pre-defined smartlists which show recently imported files.

I appreciate you guys guessing away, but how about somebody having a look at the logs?

You need to configure Windows Defender.

We don't look at logs unless we ask for them.

OK added exclusions as per tutorial.
Also reinstalled several times and uninstalled all previous versions.
MC keeps crashing shortly after startup, even without user interaction.
Uploaded the logs via email.

Crash (program disappears) or freeze (program unresponsive)?

Is the data on a local drive?

The log you sent looks like it's this MPC file crashing:
D:\MusicD\Asia\Japan\Nanae Yoshimura - The Art of the Koto\2\Nanae Yoshimura - The Art of the Koto, vol.2 - 05.mpc

Would you be willing to send a copy of it to matt at jriver dot com?

Thanks.

No no, we evolved from freeze to crash  :-\ and all files are on local drives. But Matt has found something in the logs.

Initial results look good.  Fingers crossed 😀

Happy to report that import succeeded.
Good to see also that it was caused by some freakish behaviour from a corrupted audio file and nothing wrong with auto-import as such.

Once Matt had his hands on the file it was fixed in a matter of minutes, thanks.
