Title: Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD Dual Tuner USB
Post by: dumfy on October 07, 2020, 08:11:23 am
Hi everyone,

I'm pretty new to Linux and am looking for some advice please.

I'm using Linux Mint 20 Ulyana and would like to install MC27 on it - especially as television functionality is now available with this release.

Couple of questions:
Will I be able to record and series link shows as well as watch them live as I do with the Windows version?

I'm using a Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD Dual Tuner USB. They do support Linux and provide a repo. https://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/support_linux.html

Is it needed and should I go ahead and install this repo first before installing MC27, or is it unnecessary as MC27 doesn't require it?

With many thanks

Dumfy

We only support network tuners now which are accesible over DLNA. A USB Tuner with a custom kernel would not be supported, sorry.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm confused now . . .
Not sure what a network tuner over DNLA is to be honest. Currently, I'm using MC27 on Windows 10 with this USB tuner plugged into my desktop PCs mobo and all is working fine.

I always thought this USB tuner is an alternative to fitting the same thing as a PCI board & I can use it between devices. I don't believe it comes with it's own kernel as I also use it in Windows (I'm dual booting Windows 10 and Mint Ulyana)

If I install MC27 in Mint Ulyana, will it detect and use this USB tuner?

Many thanks again

Try a Google search for Silicondust DLNA.  You should find information about their tuners that can use DLNA.

A USB tuner would work with MC on Windows, but not on Linux or Mac.

Nope, it won't work at all in Linux or Mac with JRiver Media Center 27. The rule of thumb is, if you have a USB tuner and you want to use it with JRiver Media Center, then Windows is your only option.

Television support in JRiver Media Center 27 is only possible on Linux and Mac with DLNA-capable tuners like the HDHomeRun Prime.

Thank you for the further explanations.

I'll look at Silicondust & HDHomeRun Prime as options.

I think i know the answer to this last question, but just in case . . .
If I refitted & used my previous TV Tuner PCI card instead of the USB type, would this work with MC27 under Linux, or is DLNA the only way now?

Appreciate the help and feedback. Many thanks

No, it won't work under Linux or Mac. Only DLNA-capable tuners will work in Linux and Mac.
