Title: What VST Plug-ins Can You Recommend?
Post by: JimH on October 28, 2020, 08:51:05 am
JRiver has supported VST2 plug-ins for several years, and MC27 has added VST3 Plug-in Support (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,126706.0.html).

If you've had experience with them, please recommend ones you like, with a link, and a few words about why.

Thank you.

I've tried a few times over the years and never got them working. I admit I never tried that hard either. The only thing I've wanted was a plugin to give me the "tube feel" that I miss sometimes. My system is pretty clean but it would be nice to get some tube distortion every now and then. So to add to Jim's question I'd specifically like to know if there is a tube plugin that people like and have working in MC.

I use Audeze Reveal Plug-in. I assume its VST 2. So far no functional problems in ...MC26/MC27. The only problem is, that the Plug-in does not scale on a 4K TV and its difficult to read.

Dirac 3.x

Interface is very nice.
User friendly measurement / target curve configuration with a minimal learning curve.
Allows you to measure / correct quickly and get to the important part - listening to your music
Multichannel version available
Mac and PC compatible

Edit.... Added LInks
#### Main site ####

You need to download the Dirac Live app and the processor

There is a trial period (30 days?) available for Dirac.

I am currently using the following VST plugins in MC 26 while MC 27 is brought up to the VST3 standard.

I listen to everything in 7.1 and DTS Neural Surround UpMix sounds absolutely perfect. Set it once and forget about it. I have a wide sound stage and properly mixed front main speakers are essential. In addition, the surround sound quality is good and never annoying.

The DTS plugin is from Waves. They seem to have updated the VST3 version in a better way than the VST and to install any Waves plug-in requires Waves Shell.

To use VST3s and WaveShell in MC26 I use Metaplugin by DDMF. Metaplugin works great but is limited to 8 output channels.

I adjust the sound of my system to a house curve using Dirac Live for Studio, Multichannel. I have tried many "room correction" products using the JRiver Convolver. Dirac sounds best to me and has low enough latency (JRiver Convolver not needed) for streaming video from a web browser through WASAPI Loopback.

I just started to experiment with Plogue Bidule. This is working great for the complicated routing, filtering, and mixing needed with tri-amplified main loudspeakers and it can handle up to 64 channels. I am experimenting in Bidule using the Crossover VST plugin included with Metaplugin from DDMF.

I have now tested and am using a new to me VST3 plugin called the Reason Rack Plugin: https://www.reasonstudios.com/en/reason/rack-plugin (https://www.reasonstudios.com/en/reason/rack-plugin)

I am using the Reason Rack inside the Plogue Bidule plugin (I mentioned in an earlier post), as there is a bit of signal routing required and Bidule makes that easy.

I had been searching for a 4th order 4-way linear-phase crossover (often referred to as a frequency splitter) and I found it in a Reason rack extension called 4Dyne: https://www.reasonstudios.com/shop/rack-extension/4dyne/ (https://www.reasonstudios.com/shop/rack-extension/4dyne/)  More info from the developer here: http://www.flowerau.com/4dyne (http://www.flowerau.com/4dyne)

My main loudspeakers are tri-amplified and I have a multi-sub line array so a 4-way crossover is the perfect solution for me. I am using the Dirac plugin for room correction. Dirac outputs play through the DSP crossover networks so the loudspeakers seem conventional to Dirac. The system is configured as 7.0 with the sub array serving all seven channels. The LFE channel is mixed to the sub array and center channel. I used a delay block to match the latency of the 2-way surround crossover to the 4-way mains crossover. The latency is 7ms and can be eliminated if needed by using the Linkwitz-Riley option in 4Dyne.

The Reason Rack extensions are easy to use and they "flip over" for custom signal routing with patch cables.
