Title: Last.fm Scrobbling Poor Usability
Post by: Jamil on November 07, 2020, 01:30:00 am
This has been a long-time issue that has been driving me absolute bananas.  As usual every week, MC27 is encountering issues scrobbling to last.fm.  It happens every Friday.  Starting around noon, every single song played from my play list opens Firefox where I am prompted to authorize JRiver scrobbling.  This happens for every single track change over and over.  I play my music nonstop, and I return to my computer to see an unusable amount of browser tabs open all caused by JRiver MediaCenter.  If left alone, this behavior very well could crash my computer.  This issue remains now on Saturday morning and continues.

Sometimes a picture helps illustrate how bad this is.

Last.fm keep having issues on their websites as of late, which causes this issue.

What you can try doing is completely remove your last.fm account from within MC (Delete the connection to this account), then close MC completely. Then go to last.fm's site by going specifically to https://www.last.fm/settings/applications and disconnect JRiver from the Connected Applications section. Them double check and make sure it's no longer there, then reopen MC and re-connect your last.fm account there.

Last.fm website having issues is understandable.

What is not is why the original MediaCenter coder assuming that a scrobble failure means the user is not authenticated.  Don't force the last.fm authentication link to launch for each and every scrobble failure.  Due to this design decision, every single user is plagued by this same issue (in all supported operating systems).

A better design is to instead display a brief status bar message at the far bottom that appears in the center:  last.fm scrobble failed.  Display this message for a few seconds then revert the status bar back to what it was displaying previously.  This is a single solution that could have been implemented years ago.

Did you ever solve the issue? I have the same problem running MC27 on a Mac. Every song opens up a new tab in Firefox asking to authorise scrobbling. Once clicked authorise the Last.fm site says permission is granted but it doesn't show in the Last.fm applications page.

I scrobble with Qobuz and have no issues.

I'd like to keep scrobbling, if anyone has a solution it would be appreciated!

Delete JRiver's access on last.fm's settings page and clear your account from within MC itself, then add it back in MC (and it'll prompt the last.fm page to allow it too).

I think what he's looking for is a feature change where playback isn't stopped after each track when Last F.M. is having its problems.

It would be better if there was just a short timed message that the song/track did not connect or scrobble to Last FM instead of stopping playback.

I just uncheck scrobbling for a while and check back later when this behavior happens.

Thanks for you help. I deleted access from Last.fm a while back but still have the issue. I have not cleared the account from within MC. How do I do this? In Tools>Options>Services I can uncheck 'Submit playback information to Last.fm'. I have unchecking it, playing a song. Quiting MC, then checking it again but still the same result, opens a Last.fm page asking to authorise JRiver. i click authorise and it accepts but then doesn't scrobble and a new tab is opened eveytime a song plays.

If I click 'Manage Last.fm account' it takes me to the same Last.fm page to click authorise with the same results.

Is there somewhere else in MC that I should clear the Last.fm account?

No, I am looking to solve the same issue as the OP. I want scrobbling to work again and to not open up a new Last.fm tab in my browser every time a song plays.

MC's Options > Services > Last.fm section, click on Manage Last.fm account and there should be an option called "Delete the connection to this account". That's how you clear an account from within MC.

From there go to https://www.last.fm/settings/applications and click the Disconnect button next to the JRiver option.

I don't have the option to "Delete the connection to this account". When I tried to fix this sometime ago I was able to disconnect JRiver on the Last.FM applications page.

The only option I have is to authorise it on the Last.FM site, it says permission granted but doesn't show up under the Last.FM applications page or in JRiver, so the issue is the same.

Here is a grab of the options I have in MC, do you have any suggestion as to why I can't see "Delete the connection to this account"?

That's because your account isn't connected within MC.

The issue has been solved and it was my fault.

When clicking 'manage Last.FM' account in MC service options, it opens Last.FM in the default browser to authorise the connection. MC also opens a prompt to click 'ok' once you have authorised the connection. It is imperative that this is clicked only after you have authorised the connection between MC and Last.FM in the browser. It does say this clearly in the prompt but if you skim read it (like I was) then you miss the important word 'after', i.e. if you click op before authorising in the browser it will not work.

Thank you Awesome Donkey for your help and patience. Hopefully this will help others if they fall over themselves in the same way.
