Title: Smartlist Wizard
Post by: TAJ-767 on December 02, 2020, 08:39:50 pm
In the Smartlist wizard we have rules and modifiers.
One of the modifiers is "Limit Percentage to" and has a field for entering a percent.

How is that intended to work?

I checked the Wiki - "Limit Percentage to" is not mentioned in the Smartlist Wizard Wiki page.
I understand that I can use something like it in the search language, but what I want to know is what happens if I select it in the Smartlist Wizard - there's no place to define what you are selecting a percentage of.

I'm not the first person to have asked this question, but no one seems to have gotten a direct answer.  I found 8 hits searching the forum for "limit percentage" - four of those are directly asking "what does 'Limit Percentage to' do?" and these were the answers:

* 12/30/2016: Make your playlist with the wizard then see what it did in the import export window.  It's probably using the mix modifier somehow
* 12/10/2007: Sorry, but the wizard doesn't provide any help for the somewhat complicated ~mix rule.  Possibly in a future version.
* 03/24/2007: [no response]
* 07/25/2010: Unfortunately Mix() and Limit() (the advanced version) don't work too well with the wizard

So - does anyone know what the "Limit Percentage to" modifier in the Smartlist Wizard actually does?

I did take the advice from 2016 - as far as I can tell, it just appends "~%=XX" to the Smartlist rule.  But that applies to the whole Smartlist rule set - which doesn't make very much sense.  Is the right answer "it doesn't really work as a wizard."  (...because there is no way to assign the percentage limits to particular elements of the search string.)

When you define ~mix and ~limit modifiers, you need to do them manually, is all those comments mean. So, usually the easist place to add them is within the Import/Export screen, and not the Search Wizard (though you can do it there if you want).

All of the Search modifiers are documented in the Search Language wiki article, and many examples are given in the other articles.

It works on the final file list, so, 50% would keep the top half of the file list, discarding the bottom half from the results.
