Title: remapping channels
Post by: mlknez on December 07, 2020, 01:21:54 pm
In my multichannel setup, channel:

1 - Front left
2 - Front right
3 - Center
4 - Subwoofer
5 - Surround left
6 - Surround right
7 - Surround back left
8 - Surround back right

A few of the commercial recordings that i have, do not apparently correspond to this standard.  Is there a way to remap channels and perhaps create a zone for playing recordings that have a different channel mapping?

Yes, you can use https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Parametric_Equalizer#Mixing for this

thank you for the quick reply.

So would I

1. Create a new zone
2. On the new zone, go to dsp studio and enable parametric equalizer 2
3. Add "order channels"
4. Drag into the order i want where top = 1, bottom = 8
5. Save

Then anytime i wanted to play with the channels assigned, just play the files using that zone?

Yes, except when creating a new zone, you can copy an existing one to preserve your other current settings.

Also, you should google "jriver zoneswitch".  ZoneSwitch will automatically direct the playback of files through particular zones based on tags/metadata.

So if you can identify the files that require this treatment, just tag them accordingly, and use that tag as a zoneswitch rule. Then you won't have to think about it.

The album that I tested was the Doobie Brothers Captain and Me in Quadrophonic.  With a standard mapping, it outputs

Left Front
Right Front
Center
Subwoofer

instead of
Left Front
Right Front
Left Surround
Right Surround

I did the reorder, but it doesn't work.  It never uses any channel numbers higher than 4.  So that reordering just moves around what speaker is assigned to channels 1,2,3 and 4.  I wanted to use channels 1,2,5 and 6.  Is there any way to accomplish that?

I'm guessing you either have Output Format disabled, or set to Source Number of Channels.  If so, and you play a 4-channel source, then the output stream will, by definition, be 4 channels, and channel 5 doesn't exist in that 4-channel stream.

Try setting Output Format Channels to 5.1 or 7.1.  Also select No up-mixing or down-mixing. Channels without content will contain silence.

Then, in Parametric Equalizer, use the Mix Channels function with the mode=Move to accomplish what you want. So for example, you would move Center to Left Surround.

As WER said, setting to 5.1 with no upmix or downmix should channel map the 4.0 formats properly.  If you leave the setting as upmix, you will get a properly channel mapped 5.1 version mixed for you by JRiver.

I'm really chiming in to point you to a more extensive channel mapping discussion that I found helpful (when I ran into the same issue).
So, if you are interested.....

Bottom line is that setting to something like 5.1 should take care of your issue.
