Didn't get an answer to this in the media network forum, so I'm trying here.
In 2017, Bob stated in a post:
We are currently working on a new feature to allow a playlist to be sent as a stream to the device. It will solve the gapless playback for DLNA renderers that support playing of streams with some limitations (no track metadata, limited output format selection).

Was this done? If so, how do I turn the feature on?

Here's the zip file.

This would be a very useful feature. Executed as an AV stream, also the slideshow via DLNA would finally work correctly.
