Title: Try to activate MediaCenter 25
Post by: wohc on January 06, 2021, 10:35:24 am
Hello all,

I have purchased mediacenter 27 master license recently, and would like to install another copy in my snakeoil server, running on ubuntu LTS16.04.

As snakeoil is fully workable with mediacenter 25 player, i would like to know how do i obtain mediacenter 25 activation key?

Is it possible to downgrade mediacenter 27 master license or do i need to purchase another copy of mediacenter 25 license in this case?

Thanks.

You may use your License for Media Center on additional personally-owned computers. If you have the Master License, it is good for Windows, Mac, and Linux. You definitely do not need to purchase an additional copy.

The simplest way to activate the license on additional computers is to install it and then enter the Registration Key when prompted. This will "restore" a copy of your license onto that computer.

However, if it has been less than 14 days since you activated your license on your original computer, though, you can instead simply copy the MJR file you were emailed over to that machine, and then double-click it to open it in MC. That will also license the additional computer (without "using up" a restore). Those MJR files expire after 14 days, though, so if it has been a couple weeks since you activated the first machine, you'll want to do it the "regular way" instead.

Actually, I might be wrong, but Ubuntu 16.04 LTS might be too old now for Media Center 27 to run on it. Media Center 27 requires Debian Buster, which Ubuntu 16.04 is based on an older Debian.

Unfortunately you can't purchase or obtain licenses for older Media Center versions, just the latest version. If you want to run Media Center 27 you might need to use another OS.

Reading Snakeoil forums it looks like Snakeoil OS will soon start use Ubuntu 20.04 as 16.04 support is coming to end. (There is a thread about MC 27)

Your MC27 Master License SHOULD work to activate MC26 (the latest build) as they switch the license engine over before they do the final releases of the previous version (so that new purchasers automatically get the latest version).

So, if MC26 will work on that version of Ubuntu, there might be your out until you get the OS update done.

FWIW, MC26 works fine with a MC27 server and vice versa, at least so far.
