When converting from Apple Lossless (didn't test others) to another or same lossless format a file that is tagged as HDCD by MC (when running the audio analysis) is converted to a 24 bit lossless file.
It should be converted as a 16 bit lossless file like the original.

This bug is not version specific and is also present with MC26 (I just checked)

I was reading this post: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,121281.msg838499.html#msg838499 (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,121281.msg838499.html#msg838499) so it looks like it may have been working correctly at one point...
Few notes on settings:
Under Conversion Bitdepth is set to Automatic (default). DSP box Unchecked
Under Tools->Options->Advanced Dither is set to JRiver Advanced (This setting BTW should not have any impact of File conversion)
-
In Audio - Advanced there is an option to play HDCD directly without conversion. This is meant to be used to send a 16 bit HDCD file to a HCDC capable DAC. You might see if that is honored during conversions.

Yes this box was checked. If I uncheck, it will convert the file as 16 bit like it should and rerunning the audio analysis on the converted file, it is correctly flagged as HDCD so all good here.
However...This is not correct behaviour. This setting should be ignored when converting HDCD files.
There should be 2 settings. One under advanced and the other under conversion settings:
For Conversion:
Under Audio Conversion Options -> Convert HDCD file to 24 bit check box.
For Playback:
Under tools->Advanced -> Option to play HDCD without conversion check box (and rename it this way so it is clearer rather than "Play as HDCD if possible").
(or maybe in the DSP settings instead?)
Thx for the pointer DTC.

my understanding is HDCD is 20bit

HDCD as it is encoded on a CD is 16 bits. When decoded it goes to 20 bits, but that is not a typically supported bit depth. So, the decoded version is stored in 24 bit format, with 4 bits of padding.
