Now that we've got the program doing more or less what we want it to, we're thinking about release in the next couple of weeks, so we're spending some time talking about how to describe MC.
Any thoughts you have would be appreciated.
Here's an image we put together just trying to convey what MC can do.

I think once you put it out for download on something like Downloads.com, you'll get plenty of discriptions.
Along with the usual full frontal assualt of those who have a lower than average standard of good taste.

You've got all the media in that image, but it's all modern and sterile. MC should be friendly as well, like the old Marantz receiver I run my computer through, a cabinet stereo, old-school walkman, one of those weird thin b&w TVs with the crappy picture etc. Not to mention vinyl, LED watches and the like. Iono, maybe I'm trying to inject too much camp into it *shrugs*.

Actually I do agree, the picture looks kind of sterile. It will appeal to the worst techno freaks, but probably not to regular people. And like it or not, you need those regular people as well if you want to sell the product.
And besides you should add something about ease of use. I'm totally hopless with slogans, so I won't even try to make one, but do think about that. The point is that it must not be to intimidating. You could use my seven year old son, who controls his playlists with an IR remote, Girder and MC. ;D

The one thing that keeps me excited about MC is that it's *THE* multimedia application in a sea of many "a" multimedia applications.
I'm a fan of the advertising "lines" that are succint. Something like "All Media. Single Interface. The Only One."
I, too, suggest a softer image... Microsoft's MCE sticks in my mind as a guy laying on a couch with his feet propped up watching TV. This makes is seem so effortless to be ubiquitous.

There will be many products called "Media Center" on the market from various companies including Microsoft, so the real question will be : What makes JRiver Media Center different when compared with other "Media Centers".
Answers could be :
MC is the True Media Center - It's really the one that plays them all (MPC, APE, OGG, Divx, DVDs, videos, jgs, etc..) when others only play mp3, wma, avi.
Get your media Organized, use MC - Organization is, to me, feature #1 in MC. originally developped for music files the organization power is now available for your videos, your images and more.
Don't let technology hide the people, use MC - That's a very strong point at JRiver. MC was not only made by a company but also by its users, for its users. Communication between JRiver and its users is efficient providing quick help, bug fixes and features enhancement.
That's what I see for now. I'll come back if I see more.

I REALLY think some screen shots of it put to it's full power would also help.
Make a 'sample' part of the site. Get users who use a lot of it's features to send screen shots of what they use it for, how they use it etc.
I use it to manage ALL my episodes of Friends, Dark Angel, Smallville as well as all my Music.
A screen shot of that will give people ideas and also hook all those fans of series like Friends to how easy it could be to have access to any episode at their fingertips to play instantly.
Some examples of the plug-in's - AV2 is the best I've ever seen for giving an Album an actual Album feel on a computer instead of just tons of songs - loads of people want to listen to an album, not a song. Chart Finder and Lyrics Finder - show how this can get all your chart information etc. with a screen shot of a Track Info page displaying the lyrics for their songs. Sleep Timer, show a screen shot of this counting down with a caption of: 'Fall asleep to your favourite music' or something.
Dont sell it, sell it's points. There are so many that people will eventually go: 'ok ok, I get the message, I really dont need to see any more of what it can do, where do I pay'.

I tried an advertising blurb before and only succeeded in writing cliche-ridden breathless! prose! So I wont go down that road again, but heres some focus-group top-of-the-head comments.
2 things about MC: a) all-in-one, and b) powerful, flexible database to get at all that content on your PC.
For a), the 'swiss army knife' thing could be seen as 'jack of all trades, master of none'. Its more about how central MC is to 'your digital lifestyle', and I think this is the emphasis needed here. I imagine the items in the picture 'whooshing' into the PC, sucked in by the power that is all-youll-ever-need MC. Or pictures of people jogging with an iPod, watching TV, taking photos/videos in glamorous urban-chic apartments and similar exotic locations. Laughing, smiling nuclear families gathered round their home entertainment centre, etc. Wind in your hair as you cruise in your open top listenig to your Eagles mix CD.
b) more difficult to display, but definitely for me the feature. This is the 'your media, your way' stuff. Many people dont even realise you can watch TV, photos, play DVDs, listen to music from your PC in this way. How about something sort of stolen from Mastercard: Watching: Our Honeymoon Photos on Media Center - Listening to 'Love Me Tender' on Media Center (accompanied by suitable photo of couple curled up in front of TV etc) (Wedded bliss - priceless etc.)
A slight element of sarcasm at advertising in general crept in there, but I truly support you in this however rubbish my suggestions. And now off to watch England v Turkey in Euro 2004 qualifier

Can I ask how/where you plan to market MC?
It's a great tool and deserves widespread use...hopefully your marketing plan will allow for that.
I'd suggest (at least) banner ads at every online mp3, music, and home theater forum. You convert a few people at each forum and the word of mouth spreads like wildfire.

I got 3 left.
I already used one to get set up on a Blind date with Britney. It backfired though and I never got to meet her but the gut got dropped by accident while we were argueing over why Britney hadn't turned up and got trodden on :)
