new thread, as requested.
Here's a 3.3 meg zip file containing an 11 meg avi showing you what's happening. It's done this for as long as I can remember.
The options screen is now remembering the last viewed option for me. In this case, encoding was last viewed, and mp3 was chosen, hence the immediate nature of the popup. Normally, ogg is selected by default, and the popup arrives once mp3 is selected. After MC dies, it leaves its icon in the sys tray, and this vanishes when I 'mouse over' it.

Without running the movie,
Can you say what happens if you go to the plug-ins page and install the encoder plug-in that way (being careful to choose MC, not MJ)?
If it crashes, there may be something strange going on with your system.

Going via this route, MC did not crash. I then uninstalled the plugin via the plugin manager, and reinstalled it from MC's internal prompt. MC promptly crashed again.
Jim, have you tried getting your mp3 plugin via MC's internal prompts?

Still crashing in version .140
Am I really the only person experiencing this behaviour?

I'm not getting a crash, but if I select either MP3 Encoder or MP3 Encoder VBR (from Tools>Options>Encoding) I get the error message "Can not create plug-in....." regardless of what "Encoding for..." is set to.
10-27
edit: However...uninstalling the MP3 encoders then DL'ing them again took care of problem (no crash either)
