There are several ways to control Media Center remotely. You can look at WebRemote, NetRemote, and Glissando as possibilities. Try a search here or follow some of these links:
NetRemote uses WebRemote and sometimes Girder
www.netremote.org
[IMPORTANT -- In MC 9.0.140, we've added the WebRemote capabilities to MC itself, so WebRemote is no longer needed -- see JimH's post below for more on this]
So does Glissando:
Our 3rd party plug-ins board on Interact has a link to Glissando.
WebRemote is a Media Center/Media Jukebox plugin. It's on the plug-ins page with the Interface plug-ins:
http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/downloads/plugins.pl?type=10&start=0&end=10&page=1
Any universal remote can talk to Girder which can start and control PC applications:
www.girder.nl
Girder is usually used with an IR receiver (Redrat or UIRT2, for example). You could find out more on the HTPC section of AVSForum. It's here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=26
A site devoted to remotes is:
www.remotecentral.com
There are some SDK's for what we're doing here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/developers.html
WebRemote was built by using the "Interface plug-in SDK" there.
Please add to this list of links anything you think is appropriate.

Are the plig-ins and Girder commands the same for MC9 and MJ?
Are all of the Keyboard commands also the same?
Thanks

Are the plig-ins and Girder commands the same for MC9 and MJ?
As of build 123, the Girder plugin didn't work with MC9 for me. Earlier builds seemed to work with the Girder plugin & the paramters were the same. The Girder parameters should remain the same because Girder is actually talking to the plugin.
Are all of the Keyboard commands also the same?
Most of them are the same--a few have changed. It's not hard to update your GML file when you hit a changed command.
The Girder website is also very useful:
http://www.girder.nl
Regardless, all these solutions are good for basic control. However, when you need to advanced control over MC/MJ, you are pretty much relegated to using Girder. It would be great if the MC Girder plugin could be significantly expanded so that even more advanced functions were exposed.
Best,
Brad

I mentioned this previously and wonder if it is of interest... Now we are seeing the HairStyle solution for a TV front end does the idea of a remote XML viewer not appeal...
This could be a small app that could be run on a tablet PC or other PC on the network communicating with the 'server' version of MC like the web remote or Glissando...
Web Remote has offered lots of new control options that really work well for MJ / MC.. IMHO going the same way with HairStyle would also open up lots of nice control possibilites for the home automation / control crowd.

Is there a solution right now to control MC from a PDA with a wifi card ? Either PalmOS PDA or PocketPC PDA.
If not, is there something planned ?
I am not talking about the possibility to run a MC client on the PDA to listen music from a Media Server (another very exciting functionnality) but about the possibility to remotely control a MC instance running on a desktop and playing the music on this desktop.

Netremote is your tool for that task... You can even import Pronto CCF's and it will creat 802.11 Girder events so that you can create a psuedo Pronto to control your HTPC... Add an IR Blaster to the PC and you have all the features of a pronto pro with 2 way 802.11 support for MC...

I have an ATi remote which came with my All-In-Wonder Radeon 7500 video/TV card . . . it is RF rather than IR and works well with the ATi software.
Is there some way to get this device to control my MC9??
-
LisaRCT,
Controlling MC9 from your ATI remote can be acheived with Girder. I don't have your specific remote, but am sure this is possible.
Check www.girder.nl (and their forum) for more information

REMOTE SERVER in MC 9.0.140
Replaces Web Remote
If you've been using the WebRemote plug-in for MJ/MC with either NetRemote or Glissando, you will now have the same capability built in to JRiver Media Center (versions 9.0.140 and above).
Remote Server (formerly Web Remote) is now built and configurable from Tools -> Options -> Startup.
If you're not familiar with this, it provides a way to access the MC library from a browser or other program.

What's the difference between web remote and net remote?
-
Netremote is a client app that runs on a Pocket PC or Web Tablet or ... It can control MC from across the room so it can replace a universal remote.
www.promixis.com
Remote Server is part of MC now. It's built in, and it serves out the MC library to apps like NetRemote and Glissando so they can control MC.
Web Remote is a plug-in that preceded Remote Server and does the same thing, but it has to be downloaded, installed, and configured.
The orginal code was written by Matt of JRiver and modified heavily by the authors of Net Remote and Glissando -- Ben Sweet and Daniel Ellison. We owe them a lot!
