Title: Migration to Win11 Media Render -Which CPU, Mainboard?
Post by: Manfred on October 24, 2021, 10:25:44 am
I have an old? Asus Prime micro ATX mainboard and an i3-6100 CPU which are not supported by Win11. The new JRVR is so good that I can stay with my EVGA GTX 960 - it has worked since the early beginnings of my JRiver journey without any issues. I also use rme HDSPe AIO Pro soundcard. Memory is 8GB Corsair 2133 MHz.

My current preference is - reuse GTX 960 and Memory:
Asus Prime H570M-Plus (micro ATX)

then there are two CPU options:
Something like Pentium G6605 4,3 GHz 2C4T, 58 W TDP (similar to my i3) or i3-10365 3.9 Ghz (or some model # lower) 4C8T , 65 W TDP

Any opinions ? Should I wait for Alder Lake or something different?

I'd personally wait to see what happens with the 12th gen intel launch as it is only a few days away before making a decision between:
- If it aint' broke and doing what you want, leave the PC on Win 10
- Try upgrading the PC to Win 11
- Replace the CPU/Mobo (either to a new Gen12 or I presume what will be even cheaper Gen10/11 gear)
- Replace the entire unit (as the PSU will need to be replaced at some point) with a Gen 12 NUC (waiting to see how the new iGPU in the 12th series will go).

FWIW, I've always gone a mid range CPU (i5) for the HTPC just "because".

Thank you jmone - I can wait - so I will see what comes with Gen12. I have to upgrade Workstation 8years old), Server (5 years old) and Media Renderer and none is Win 11 compatible. Media renderer is currently my test object.
