Title: Media Center 9.0.134 beta
Post by: Matt on March 26, 2003, 12:40:37 pm
Media Center 9.0.134 beta is available.

Many things will crash and not work.  If that worries you, please wait for a couple of weeks.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90134.exe

1. Changed: "Album Grouping" will occur in Smartlists and Playlist Groups now. (if turned on)
2. Changed: Thumbnail cleanup on shutdown should be faster.
3. Fixed: CD & DVD view scheme group didn't list imported CD files.
4. Fixed: My Computer icons had strange black borders.
5. NEW: Added "Collapse All" to tree's right click menu and "View" menu. (Ctrl+G)
6. Fixed: Skin Manager would jump behind the main window when it was invoked.
7. Fixed: Title bar would flash when viewing menus. (fix requires MEGA-ME skinning)
8. NEW: Media Center will now make sure that user has enough rights before running or installing the program.
9. Changed: Send To -> CD, DVD & Handhelds menu smarter when there are 0 or 1 devices.
10. Fixed: Right-click MRU tracking won't roll the 3rd item off the list.
11. Changed: Fullscreen (not playing) no longer integrated with Hairstyle. (so Hairstyle won't popup if you click "Stop")
12. NEW: Added new search keyword: removable= to quickly find CD / DVD files. (ex. "removable==1 ~d=a" to get all CD / DVD files)
13. Fixed: Library Manager list would show horizontal scrollbar when showing a lot of libraries.
14. NEW: Started introducing new art.  Still very much a work in progress, so please hold any criticism.
15. Changed: Updated toolbar -- button configuration will be lost.  Expect this to happen for a few builds.
16. Changed: "List Style" now a default toolbar button.
17. Fixed: Several CD digital playback and ripping problems.
18. Changed: MC will no longer attempt to save tag changes to data, tv, or unknown media type files.
19. Fixed: MC would attempt to download tagging plugins for file types it couldn't tag. (like avi, asf, etc.)
20. Fixed: MC would display "failed to update tags" messages for files it couldn't tag. (like avi, asf, etc.)
21. Fixed: Download Manager would crash while opening options window.
22. Fixed: Window Media encoder was crashing Media Center.
23. Fixed: Tree would show old text when doing a rename.
24. Changed: Several MCC enhancements. (new file uploaded)
25. Fixed: MC would fail to play some WAV files even though the system could actually play them.

Woo hoo, my first post.

D'oh, I've lost half my media.

I installed v 9.0.134 over v 9.0.133, and nearly 2000 of my 4061 files were missing from the database.

I had to search my hard drive importing everything, and re-tagging all my movie clips.

My audio was all still there though. Just Images and movie clips missing.

Doc,
Can you start a new thread on this?  It could be related to WMP components we install.

If you have WMP9, please make sure you have the release version, not a beta build.

Great new logo and splash.

Still Open
1. Mp3's imported from a CD do not display images stored in the file during playback or in the database.

2. Can't seem to create a View Scheme that will show a CD of mp3's in the tree by Volume Name/Filename. Files on hard drives show correctly under this scheme but the CDs do not show the folders below the root at all. The correct path is shown in the database.

3. When in window mode the file propertise window gets lost under the Media Center window when another track is clicked in the library. Should at least have an option for "Always on top".

Testing....
Resizing Media Center horizontally in mega-me mode intermittently causes album art being displayed in a visualization to revert to the the MJ Surfer. (Art is inside MP3 file)

Fixed/Explained
Everytime Media Center opens it sets the volume for the "wave" output to maximum.
Thanks for the info Matt.

I love how you guys say "don't criticize" the new artwork... and it's the best stuff I've seen on this puppy, yet! :)

That logo would make a really sweet file icon. Although  different icons for different media types (audio, video, image) would be better.

Good job guys!

This one's been on my bug list for so long (back when 8 was in beta) that I had given up hope that it would ever be fixed. :)

I'd love to see that thingy that comes up on the MC9 screen when you first open it  (MC9 is now loading) as the desktop icon!

Fantastic build.  Love the way the menus have been handled, icons are looking great.  Only thing I'd like to see on the menus is "select all" in first menu screen  (especially since you've kept "edit selected field" on the first menu, where IMHO it belongs.)  Not a big deal though...

Again, fantastic job!!

After repeated switching of Artist/Album/Playlist from left pane, the center pane (assuming tag window open) ceases to update.  Only way to have center window update is to close application and reload.  Behavior goes back to normal until after extended use.  It then stops refreshing again.

Suggestion:  It would be great to be able to right click the center pane and select refresh to do a manual refresh.

I'm still having the problem of too much acceleration when dragging a song in a playlist to a location that is "out of the viewable pane."

If this is not something built in to program, could someone share with me how to correct the issue?

Thank you.

Still a memory leak when doing analyze audio on a large number of files.  I've noticed that the memory really jumps when it tries to analyze a file that fails for some reason (error in file, or file type it doesn't know how to handle).  Try it on some files that have been corrupted.  Note: it may take 30 minutes to an hour of analyzing before it 'goes crazy' and chews up all available memory.

This problem has been here since at least version 9.0.89 - its high time it was fixed! :(

PS: the note to "please wait a couple of weeks" is also getting a little old.  Three or four months (so far) is a bit more accurate.  I don't mind waiting, but I'd like a bit more realistic time frame in the comments.  A couple of weeks it IS NOT.

On the positive side, I think this is a great product - just need to get those bugs outta there.

Are you going to fix it for people who don't like mega-me skinning?   It looks really tacky on such a professional product.

Also something strange is happening.   If you run your mouse a few times backwards/forwards over the main menu items while a menu is open then click on somewhere in the app you can see the menu item's flash as if it's going backwards thru a history of what's been opened.

That menu issue is still around.

From when I installed MC9.0.134 over x.133 my hard disks runs continuously, if MC is on. If I close MC all is fine.
I reverted to MC x133 but again my HDs run like like to copy a few of very big files, but without stop.
Have you some idea about this?

Thanks

just an idea - how about colours for each media type? blue for audio, green for video, orange for playlists, yellow for images, red for not yet imported?

I think it is not a good idea to mix different semantics (media type and import status) in the same representation attribute (color in this case). I like as it is right now (color attribute for import status) but to second Nila, in a different way though, I would like a different icon for each media type.
Title: Re: Media Center 9.0.134 beta
Post by: nila on March 26, 2003, 11:40:34 pm
There already are different icons michael :)

Just make sure the files you are looking at are given the different 'media type' in MJ.

It reports my m2v video's as audio so at first can appear that it's one icon.
It in fact has several very pretty icons for each type :)

If you'd find it confusing to mix colour for types and not imported - how about the not imported icons just having a lack of colour and being greyscale?
Then they'd really stand out as they'd be really dull looking :) everything else thou would be peerrrtttyyyy :)

p.s. - My Computer now looks 10000 times better - Somehow fixing the icons makes it look ten times more professional even though functionally it's the same.

TV is broken.
Screen updates too slowly, so you get a still image to look at that changes every 40 seconds or so.
Double click a channel in the channels list, tv to the right shows the channel, playing info above the play button updates correctly, change channels via the right click menu changes the channel, but the playing info above the play button is not updated.

Still can't play or rip cd's
Insert audio cd while MC is closed.......
MC opens correctly, performs cd lookup (correctly), loads the tracks into "playing now" then hangs with "waiting" in the playing info above the play button.

Insert audio cd while MC is open.......
info box pops up saying "gathering info & updating view" and MC goes *poof* and is instantly gone!!!!

Ripping goes the same way as before....
can't open drive - parameter out of range [OK]
can't access file - drive is not open [OK]
try next file - [YES or NO]
etc etc etc

Nila,

Your request was in MC already. It was first what it is now, then it got changed, and then it got changed again. Should be an option with your request as default.

Dragyn
- People will change their mind about wanting it all selected as default the first time they make a mistake like mine.
I edited the search criteria for a view scheme, then chose 'fill in properties from filename'. I didn't noticed that MJ had jumped to the top of the tree after I'd edited the view scheme properties and then had automatically selected all the files.
As a result - EVERY single one of my mp3's (10,000) had their tag changed and saved to the file. There was no cancel button so I had to let it finish so that I would then be able to click 'undo'. 100 songs into the undo MJ crashed and I had 10,000 wrongly tagged mp3's - NOT a fun job when they all have different naming formats and you want to move things like: 'featuring ....' into the name field rather than artist so as to not mess up the tree.
I've spent HOURS on it so far and still haven't even managed to get all my tracks sorted yet :(

I'd request it at the very least as an option, as well as an option to have a confirmation prompt before editing more than 20 or so tracks (Enough to let people modify an album without having to confirm)

Can MJ NOT select for editing everything in a view if nothing is selected as this is way too dangerous for accidentally tagging loads of files
Moreover because there is not 'cancel' button for many tag operations. BTW it is incomprehensible for such operations which can take hours in some cases.

When Using The Clean Up Option In Lyrics

It Does Not Uppercase The First Word On Each Line.

=====================================

It would also be nice it the clean up option would not change the case of any web links that happen to be in the Lyrics.

Bugs:
1. When the File Properties window is docked to the right edge, pressing Alt-Enter does NOT put the keyboard focus in the File Properties window...it just toggles the window hidden & restored (again...when docked).  So, it's a useless keyboard shortcut if you really want to edit the tag info...you have to grab the mouse again (argh).

  • Option to specify command string to use for the mp3 encoding without having to seperately download and use LAME (seems pointless to have to maintain my version of LAME outside MJ when it automatically includes LAME as a build in encoder) - Reason for this is that these settings -b 32 -m j --abr 70 -B 256 --resample 32 -q 2 give much smaller file sizes for VBR mp3's than the 'LOW' setting included and are perfect for a portable player as the quality is still good.

Nila,

You know much more about MC9 than I do, so forgive me if I misinterpreted this, but I ran into this myself  (wanted to use the --alt-preset standard settings with the MC9 encoder), and Doof set me straight.  I pasted in the settings  (-b 32 -m j --abr 70 -B 256 --resample 32 -q)  you want to use, worked with no problem.  To do it,  go into "tools", then "options" then "encoding".  Select  "MP3 Encoder VBR"  (the LAME encoder), for quality select "custom", then click on "advanced".  In command line, you'll see "--alt-preset fast standard."  Delete this, and put in  your settings, -b 32 -m j --abr 70 -B 256 --resample 32 -q, and that should do it!

I was using my EAC/LAME  LAME encoder as an external encoder because I couldn't figure out how to get the --alt-preset standard settings using the MC9 LAME encoder.  You can use any preset you want (provided it's supported by the 3.91 version of LAME) by going through the steps.  Hope this helps!

There's no mention of it on yr fix list, but Media Server is working much better in 134. MC doesn't crater while playing through a longer file queue.

Thanks...HTH

A bug I've consistently had for a very long time:

If you hit the Mini-Me icon right after pressing play or selecting something to play, it will crash.

That is, if you go to Mini-Me before the file has finished buffering, it gives a fatal error and XP wants to know if you want to send the error info to Microsoft.

This has happened on my computer for a long time, and I do it somewhat often due to my habit of clicking stuff way too fast.

Thanks, folks, this is a great product!

Bug?

In Plug-in Manager Handheld/Portable drives, choosing Configure allows editing of the Volume label but it doesn't change anything.

Minor, I know, but still a bug.

Fantastic build guys!  The new artwork is great...I eally like the startup and the new logo.  Could this be condensed down to a nice 24bit XP icon for on the desktop and for using with files??  It looks absolutely gorgeous and would not be lost on a standard XP theme desktop...

Little bug tho that I don't think has been mentioned...The menus in the visualization studio are not working.  Clicking on them does nothing meaning I cannot do a save as only save...

I'm still having the video playback problem I described in the last bug thread.

I can finally burn CD's again, though! :)

Ripping goes the same way as before....
can't open drive - parameter out of range [OK]
can't access file - drive is not open [OK]
try next file - [YES or NO]
etc etc etc
Are you running with administrator privilege?

Great job!!!

Bug

1. Import Media (Mp3 files):
Currently: When reading artist, if TPE2 contains data, artist is filled with data from TPE2.  If TPE2 is blank, then artist is filled with data from TPE1.

Fix: Artist should always be filled with data from TPE1.

Yup. Also uninstalled, removed the registry entries in the Software branches of registry then reinstalled.

OK, tried another couple of things......

so long ago, I can't remember when, I made my cdplayer.ini file "read only" (for YADB testing purposes), removed read only, tried again, same probs.

The above test was with the cd in the burning drive (plextor) which is master, when I try the cd in the DVD drive, (plextor's slave) instead of the "waiting" message it gives me "bufferring" instead, but still won't play.

Can't think of anything else to try....

(cd playback/ripping last worked in .131)

I have to say I agree with Nila on the everything-selected-by-default thing. That is very counterintuitive and a big disaster waiting to happen. File Properties should display something like "No Files Selected" when nothing is selected, and then let us select the files we want to edit (or select all).

I'd hate it if I opened up My Documents on my computer, hit Delete and watched everything disappear. The same should be true for MC.

And yes, I know this has gone back and forth a few times, but seriously... common sense dictates that nothing selected means nothing selected.

I started a thread about the select all / select none stuff.
