Have a look at Tools > Options > Audio > Volume > Volume Protection.

Do you check 'Analyse audio on new files' when you import audio files?

Turn on volume levelling and analyze everything.  It will be perfect.

sounds like it worked

is there  a way to make sure it does this whenever i add a new track
or run when playing a movie  - it might take days to scan my entire movie collection lol

There is an option to analyze audio when you import.

File -> Library -> Configure Auto Import -> Tasks (check the box for "Analyze audio for audio files")

That should run Analyze Audio for anything you add to your Library as you import it.  I still haven't set that check box.  Every once in a while I look at the "stock" Smartlist Audio -- Task needs Audio Analysis to see if I've missed any files when I import them.  I usually have.
