Title: Memory Playback Problems with Large Files
Post by: ConradT on November 02, 2021, 11:30:51 am
MC28 has problems with memory playback - load entire file (not encoded) into memory for large files.  I am downmixing 5 or 5.1 files into stereo for headphone listening and some large files (5.9 GB) work, whereas others (4.1 GB, ) are truncated.  The 4 GB one is 8:41 in length, but is only 14 seconds long using memory playback!  Others are shortened by varying amounts.

Without the memory playback option all files playback without problems.

I have 16 GB of memory in the computer, so it seems that should be adequate.

Is there anything I can do to make things work?

What if you loaded full file (decoded) into memory?

Are you using the 32-bit version of Media Center 28? If so, I believe the limit for the 32-bit version for memory playback is 4GB (or actually probably 3.5GB) if my memory serves correctly. The 64-bit version, again if my memory serves correctly, is either 8GB or 16GB which also might depend on file type and memory playback option used. Regardless, I do remember Matt increasing the limit for the 64-bit version a couple major Media Center versions ago. The 32-bit version unfortunately is capped at whichever limit be it 4GB or 3.5GB, and it can't be increased due to technical limitations of 32-bit apps and the maximum amount of memory they can use (which is 4GB or 3.5GB).

23.0.61 (9/19/2017)

7. Changed: Increased the cap for memory playback track loading to 2GB on 32-bit and 16GB on 64-bit.

I think that was the last change to the memory playback limits, but cannot be sure.

I am using the 64 bit version on Windows 10, version 20H2.  Please let me know what other information I can furnish to help solve this.

Also, the files do play back correctly using the decoded file into memory option, but I prefer the full file into memory.

More Information:  These files are tracks from commercial DSD 256 albums, either 5 channel or 5.1, and the truncation problem occurs with multiple albums, but there is no obvious pattern as to the amount of truncation or the file length, except that this happens with files larger than 4 GB.  However, I do have one track of 5.9GB that is not truncated.
