Hi all,
I just purchased an upgrade to MC28. Already had 19, 21, and 24 previously on this machine.
As usual, I have downloaded and installed MC (28.0.86), and it went without a glitch.
But as soon as the program opens, a first thing seems fishy : The "web browser engine is not working properly".
When trying to play a video, it "fails to download and install the LAV audio decoder".
Also, it didn't recover the setup from the previous version. I have to manually restore the previous library backup.
Finally, it can't check for updates ("an error occured").
I never had this happen with any of the previous versions.
The machine is a 4th gen i5 running Win7 Pro 64 bits.
It is 100% dedicated to running MC. No configuration change has been done since installing MC24.
I have the same problem with the 32 and the 64 bits versions of MC.
Installing MC by running the installer as Admin doesn't change a thing.
Neither does disabling the Windows firewall and Windows defender.
Any idea on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
David
PS : My main reason for upgrading to MC28 is JRVR, because contrary to what I said in my last thread a year ago, this machine was indeed a little bit underpowered to run MC24 with ROHQ on medium settings without hicups on video playback...
PS2 : I previously had to install the 32-bit version of MC24, because there was an incompatibility between the 64-bit version and my audio card driver (RME Fireface UCX).

Sounds like MC can't connect to the internet. Can you open any webpage using the browser on that machine?
Do you have any other antivirus or security software installed? Do you have a VPN, proxy, or custom rules in your router?
Also, check if the date, time and timezone are correct on the machine.

You probably need to manually install the Edge-based WebView2 needed for web browsing within MC28 (if it's even available for Windows 7) or switch the browsing engine in MC28 to Internet Explorer. If that doesn't work, maybe it just doesn't work on Windows 7 anymore? That could make sense, since it's a dead OS and as far as I know isn't tested with MC anymore.

@zybex : Yes, I agree that MC can't see the internet, although I have normal internet access from the machine (I'm replying from it ;-) ), no other security software, no VPN, proxy or custom rules.
@Awesome Donkey : Time is OK on the machine. Could you point me to where I find the browsing engine setting ?
Found it !
Thanks guys !

MC's Options > Tree & View > Web Browser and set Engine to Internet Explorer. Then completely close MC and reopen it.

Yep, did that. The interface now works. Amazon, audible etc... accessible.
Still no luck with plugins and updates...
Oh, and quite obviously, I also just got "the required bluray dependencies could not be automatically installed".
OTOH, licence registration worked...

Edge wasn't on this machine. Just installed it. Re-installed MC to be safe. Browser doesn't work with the setting on Edge.

The WebView2-based Edge that MC uses is different than the normal Microsoft Edge browser you can install and use.
Should be able to download the needed WebView2 Runtime (Evergreen Standalone Installer should suffice) here, no clue if it works on Windows 7: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2/

That did the trick for the browser, thanks !
Unfortunately, the rest still isn't working...

Logged the error : MC can't download the compressed LAV file from jriver.com (2620483: 4128: Reader: CWinINetReader::DownloadFromHTTPURL: HttpSendRequest error: 12157), while Firefox can... and the browser within MC as well !
Same error code when checking for updates.

Found the solution by googling the error code : I had to enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 in Windows 7 : Control panel / internet options / advanced !
Probably because only a very old version of IE is installed on the machine...

Thanks for reporting the solution.
