Title: Moving files to an external drive
Post by: TJoerg on March 27, 2022, 08:11:23 am
Since my build in drive is full I want to move music-files to an external drive.
Is there any recommended workflow to it?
I just want to keep all my settings, playlists, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Use Rename, Move, & Copy Files.  Recommend to do it increments and make sure you have it correctly set to where you want it by only doing one album/folder as a test before proceeding in a bigger group.

This will keep Media Center pointing to the correct source for playlists, albums, etc.

Thanks.

It seems this doesn't keep my folder structure Artist/album/title.

Can I move the main folder by finder first and command MC to "find + replace" afterwards??

The wiki has a topic called Moving Files.

It should.  Read the wiki topic on how it works.

A few tips:

Back up your music collection, in the original location, if at all possible.  That way you can return to your starting point if things go bad.  Time machine is probably backing it up already if you are using your internal drive.

Run an MC Database Backup before you do any RM&C commands.  That way you can return Media Center back to a known state as well.

I've done this kind of operation with MC at least a dozen times now, if not more.  You'll get it done.  Just think it through and go slowly.
