My music library is huge, close to 600,000 songs. It seems like MC is constantly bogging down and lagging to bring up the files. Are there any settings that can help with this? I am using a large SSD drive for my music.
-
Have you configured Windows Defender?
Any other antivirus?
Files on a local drive?
-
just defender
-
Configured?
Location of files? Internal drive, USB drive, NAS?
-
I just followed your instruction on the exclusions for Defender. We shall see what happens. I excluded what was in the file. My music drive is L:\ & M:\ but I excluded the file types for them.
-
Please answer my last question about drives.
-
Internal SSD drive
-
Why drive L if it's internal?
It matters because if the files are on a NAS, most operations will be slower, especially in the first few days after a new install.
-
I have l:. M:, N:., O:, P:
they are all for movies other than my l: for lossless, and M: for mp3's
-
I must say that after adding the exceptions to Defender, things have improved a lot. I have over 8,000 movies as well and have been an MC customer since version 7 I think. Love the program.
-
Update: The issue is creeping back in. I do not have any power savings turned on and this is an SSD drive so there is nothing spinning. Any more ideas?
-

Is all of that on one SSD? That's pretty unusual. What is the drive and confirm that it's an internal drive, not a USB drive.

I have l:. M:, N:., O:, P:
I too have M N O P.
Mine are all Internal HDDs [not SSDs]
I too have a Large Library of 125,000+ tracks.
... It seems like MC is constantly bogging down and lagging to bring up the files.
I too suffer from bogging down and lagging, (for example disk spinning) despite adhering to all instructions such as Taming Defender.
I am following this with interest. 😎🧐

I attached a screen shot of my library

Any other antivirus or security software?
Any calculated fields?
The hash symbol (#) is an unusual directory name.
What do your auto import settings look like? What happens if you turn them off? A bad file can sometimes cause problems.

Might be worth double checking the Windows Defender settings.

Great day all, Jim,
I can't place my finger onto it neither, but since I've upgraded to MC29 I also notice some delays with my library.
Onto .27 at the moment, .19 and .22 same effect.
Even when browsing MC's tree into Standard View there's some lagging now.
Normally MC jumps instantly between my views (I'm since <MC19 on board) but with MC29 it takes like 1-2 seconds to switch.
Defender still configured as instructed and I do always doublecheck after each upgrade of MC.
Besides going from MC28 to MC29 nothing else changed on my system (as far we can know when using Windows).
Window 11 already installed a while ago - when using MC28.
FYI: 77000 files into my lib and JRMark is at 4513 (i9-9900T)
Lib is onto C drive which is a NVME M2 SSD.
Guessing nothing extraordinary there neither.
-
Double check Windows Defender. Uninstall any other antivirus.
-
Thanks Jim,
No other Antivirus in place.
Only using Defender since several releases of MC.
Defender configured 1/1 as instructed here.
I've double checked all MC29 entries with my previous MC versions rules.
Even keeping Task manager open to monitor the ASE activity when changing Views, FYI no raise of the antimalware service exe neither.
Still hoping to find some indication of what's causing the lagging with this version.
First notice was 29.019

Configuring Windows Defender for an earlier version won't work. You need to do it for the current version of MC.
Any calculated fields?
-
Thanks Jim,
As i wrote i double checked all actual MC29 entries and compared them with all rules from entries of the previously MC.
No single entry or rule pointing to MC29 is seems missing compared to MC28.
Something seems different somewhere. Maybe there's a specific folder or file to be excluded vs MC28.
I've read again the post about Taming Defender, nothing missed there.
Maybe not completely covering Defender's actions, but if it's Defender working against, would it's activity of the Defender executable would be noticeable in Task Manager, but nothing of a raise on activity when switching views.
Confident we'll find the cause (as always) :-)

If you think slowness starts with recent builds it would be helpful if you could find the exact build where it starts. Thanks.

Hi Matt, thanks,
Since MC29 I've noticed this kind of lagging, .19 was the first version I've installed.
.24 and .27 has the same 1-2 seconds of delay when changing views.
28.0105 is the latest version of MC28 I've got installed.
Thisone is perfect and faster compared to MC29 handling views.
To me it's only noticeable when changing views.
All thumbnails are generated and in place.
No audio or other analysing going on.
CPU is 6% and some 15% of memory in use.
Rebooting doesn't change any.
0.118s to write to C-drive
0.084s to read from C-drive

You could send me a library backup and I could see if I could reproduce. I'm matt at jriver. Thanks.
-
I use the # sign for bands that start with a number. I run my imports manually but they only point to the various drive letters for music and movies. I have 8,000 movies as well.
There is no other antivirus software running and I have disabled windows defender with gpedit.msc and it still happens.
I am sure it has to do with the size but it does seem worst and worst over the years.
-
# for bands that start with a number or symbol and not a letter otherwise I have the entire alphabet there for sorting,

here is a snip

Mans library backup helped me find a problem. We were getting the ideal aspect ratio for the list items. It should have happened once per list but it was happening once per item. I'll get it fixed for the next build tomorrow. Thanks!
-
do you want a backup of my library?
-
Configuring Windows Defender for an earlier version won't work. You need to do it for the current version of MC.
If you simply put in exceptions for c:\Program Files\J River and %appdata%\J River you should not have to redo the exceptions when you change versions.
-
do you want a backup of my library?
Yes. Matt at jriver.
-
That is the way I have excluded things.
-
Excellent, thanks a lot Matt.
Nice to hear you've found something.
About taming Defender, I have both scenarios excluded.
The folder in general and the individual files.
-
MY library is too large to post. How can I get it to you?
without thumbnails, it is 160 MB
with is 1.39 GB
-
dropbox?
-
Is Google drive ok? if so what email address?

Thanks. Could you PM to let me know what's slow? I loaded the library and clicked around and it seemed pretty quick. I don't think the same fix from earlier will help you because you use details view. Thanks.
