Title: Alexa!
Post by: avpman on May 09, 2022, 03:06:45 pm
Still no Alexa integration??? I would pay up to $50 extra for that integration. Are there any plans at all to implement something similar to what Houseband was?

Sorry but this user is NOT willing to pay an extra $50 bucks for Alexa. And I don't use Alexa.

I am suggesting those who want it could pay extra only for the feature. Not to change the base JR price.

I don't want to pay an extra $50 either, but definitely DO want this feature back. The sad thing is that there actually used to be integration with Alexa through House Band (a 3rd party app) as recently as a year ago, but this has not been discontinued! This absolutely should be a #1 priority and has been brought up several times. Why are the developers not even addressing this concern??

I think avpman threw the number $50 in as a guess but I think it would be worth it

I spend $50 or £50 pounds in my case every week on a Chinese takeaway for me and the missis and its gone in an hour (Nice though)

Why Alexa, well we had an afternoon drinks party yesterday with friends and I set up a 4 hour 70's playlist on JRiver, friends turned up and the Wife said
"Alexa play seventies music on the everywhere group" (we have 3 Alexa's)

Oh I thought beaten to it,  Ok so Alexa did not play all the classic tracks I had pulled up to play but...

How cool would it be to say "Alexa play my seventies playlist from JRiver" or words like that

If a third party could put it together, I don't understand why JR won't. I suspect it's because it's of no interest to them instead of what their customers want. It's also disconcerting that they moved the original Alexa topic to the Third-Party Board. Possibly looking for someone else to pick up the project? What a great sales opportunity, missed: JR Now Works with Alexa!

The squeaky wheel gets the oil guys. Keep asking...

I dare not speak for JRiver, so this is my opinion and guess on this subject. I think part of the issue here is not everybody is using Alexa, I sure don't own any Alexa-powered devices, I have several Google Assistant-powered devices. If JRiver decided to start going down the smart assistant rabbit hole by adding Alexa support, then they'd have users asking for Google Assistant support, Siri support, Bixby support, Cortana support, etc. At least with Alexa and Google Assistant, those are probably the two most popular ones (Siri could be considered as much too, but since it's Apple there's probably extra hoops involved). It sounds like it's a deep, time consuming (and thus costly) rabbit hole to go down and who knows what hoops the manufacturers have in place that have to be jumped through when adding support for various smart assistants. I'd also wager the majority of MC's users, myself included, don't actually care about support for smart assistants.

And that's not even considering things like the potential privacy issues adding support for the various smart assistants could open. Honestly, in my opinion sometimes it's best to leave it to third-parties in that regard - I know that's not what everyone wants to hear and it sucks that House Band went away, but remember that in software development not everything everyone wants can be implemented and this could be one of those things. It simply may not be worth the development investment currently by going down that rabbit hole. Of course, I could always be wrong too, but this is my opinion on the subject.

They don't 'have' to do anything. Alexa and Google home would be enough. Or just Alexa to replace what someone else had in place. Seriously, even my Robot vacuum has Alexa support these days. Not adding voice support is not forward thinking in this day and age of technology - IMHO.

Sonos has announced voice control. It has worked through Alexa but this seems like this is its own proprietary system - "Hey Sonos".

I'd still love to see Alexa support. It would be awesome when using my echo show 10.
I can use JRiver Panel on the Amazon Silk Browser to play music using JRiver but having to manually search and using the touch screen is tedious.
Using voice commands to interact with "Panel" would also be a great option!

I hope it will be incorporated in future releases.
