I have a problem installing MC 29 64-bit 290062 on Windows 10 v.21H2
Last installed MC version: 27 64-bit
The install seems to work fine, but the install window just disappears - there is no message saying that it has completed
MC 29 appears on the Windows start menu as a newly installed app, but doesn't launch.

These problems are almost always related to antivirus. You need to configure Windows Defender.
-
Thanks.
I use Kaspersky. Windows Defender is disabled in Kaspersky (Windows shows "These settings are managed by Kaspersky Internet Security").
In Windows Defender, the option to use Kaspersky but get Defender to check periodically is also turned off.
I tried installing with Kaspersky disabled, but that didn't help.
I also tried installing MC 29 on another PC, on which I added the install file to exclusions in Defender. On that PC I get "Critical Error. The following module failed to load: C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Temp\7zS00AE2245\InstallLauncher.exe. It has reported the following error: Failed to load JRTools. Please reinstall the latest version of the program."

Disabling AV may not work. Uninstall. We recommend Windows Defender only now.
-
Is Windows Defender so good now these days that I don't need another AV program?
Or do you mean uninstall Kaspersky to install MC and then reinstall it?
Strange that I can't install on the other PC though, since it only has Defender.
Is it possible that the latest Windows cumulative update (KB5014699, 6/14/2022) which apparently "addresses security issues" is causing the install problem?

Yup.
Microsoft has done really well with Defender over these last few years. Once upon a time, pre-Windows 10 era, Windows Defender was considered a joke. Fortunately Microsoft has really stepped up and started making impressive improvements to both Defender itself and Windows with very nice security features. These days Windows Defender is a top-tier antivirus/antimalware app, so much so in my personal option the days of needing to purchase third-party antivirus subscriptions is finally over.

Are you using a limited Windows user account or something like that? No, it shouldn't be affected by anything like that, chances are something is interfering with it somewhere.

Thanks! Good to know. I've been using Kaspersky for years and it never occurred to me to check if I still needed it.
I de-installed Kaspersky and the MC29 install that wouldn't launch.
I tried reinstalling MC29, also using "run as administrator" but the result was the same.
Although I am the only user and admin in any case, I created an admin account with the command prompt, logged in with the admin account and tried again. The only difference was that at the end of the install routine, I got a message saying MC29 had installed successfully and the option to launch it. Unfortunately it still doesn't launch.
I also tried installing MC28. Same story: install completes and MC28 is in the start menu, but doesn't launch.
I tried again on the other machine too. No luck there either. I still get the same error message about JRTools.

Did you reboot?
-
Yes, after de-installing Kaspersky and after installing MC.
-
Yeah, something's not right. It sounds like either something is corrupting the download of the installer or something on your PC is preventing Media Center from launching.
-
Did you download after uninstalling Kaspersky?
-
No, but I did now.
MC290062 exe was the same size as before (39,926 KB) but I tried it anyway.
I also tried new downloads of MC290058 and MC28106.
None of them would launch after installing.

Did you configure Windows Defender? https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114101.0.html
-
Yes, I did, for the folders C:\Program Files\J River\ and C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 29\
I now also added the individual files in the folders.
Still won't launch :-(

64 bit MC on a 32 bit OS?
-
Nope. Running MC27 64bit no problem.
About Windows shows "64-bit operating system, x64-based processor"

I assume you've tried waiting a long time (5 minutes) to see if you get any information from the OS.
Something is wrong on your machine and I'm out of ideas.
If it were my machine, I would probably reinstall the OS.
