I have a problem with GPU utilisation.
In Standard view, GPU utilisation is 0-1% but when I switch to Theater view, it jumps immediately to 90% and stays there. This increases power usage considerably causing excessive heat up of my passive cooled case.
MC version: 29 up-to-date
Windows: 10 up-to-date
CPU: i5-10400
RAM: 16GB
GPU: internal UHD 630
Tried:
- all permutations of anti-aliasing and mipmaps in Theater view->Advanced
- all permutations in General->Video
- a discrete GPU (GT 1030) which exhibits similar problem but utilisation jumps to 70% and then up to 90% in a few seconds
Note:
- I only use JRiver to play music (no videos)
- I installed some custom images for Theater view background (these have the same resolution as the TV - 4K)
- There is nothing else running that uses the GPU
- I don't think this was happening previously: I've been running JRiver on this PC since August 2021 starting with version 28
- I have a few VSTs running in DSP Manager but the problem still occurs if these are disabled
Am I missing a setting? Any ideas?
-
I also tried different video renderers and renderer options but this made no difference.
I found that GPU utilisation is back at 0-1% if I switch to Display view.
90% GPU whether iGPU or discrete GPU simply by switching to Theater view with nothing playing - something is wrong here.
Has anyone else seen this?
-
Yes. Same here. Tried a few times over many years/versions.
-
Hmm, not seeing those high of numbers:
-Laptop GPU jumps to 15%
-Server GPU jumps to 25%
-
But aren't even those numbers very high to render a simple screen with a few static buttons and a background which changes many seconds apart?
I would expect negligible GPU usage like the Display view to render this.
-
I will add that in theater view I get hitches and sometimes it becomes nonresponsive, it does feel like it is taxing beyond what I would consider normal.
-
Try adjusting quality and frame rate in Theater View settings.
Theater View uses 3D drawing and some drivers may work better than others.
-
Hi, maybe there is a problem, watch my video.
When I switch to theater view it doesn't behave like version 28 and earlier, with the windows remote control mce when I press the green or back button it seems to go out of theater view for a moment ...
Thank you

The quality settings in Theater view make no difference: I still have 1% GPU utilisation in Standard view and 90% in Theater view home page with nothing playing even with "No Anti-Aliasing" and "Use Mipmaps" enabled or disabled.
I could not find frame rate settings in Theater view.
-
Tried this while playing a track, switched from standard view (2.35% cpu) to theatre view (5.35% cpu). Misread the OP.
-
@Jimh @Hendrik can you please comment:
Should Theater View home page with nothing playing incur 90% GPU utilisation on UHD630 and GT1030 GPUs (from 1% in Standard view)?
If not, is this a setting that we have missed or is it a bug?
Can we PLEASE have a response

I see 17 to 19% when in Theater View. That's normal. Theater View is animated 3D.
I don't know why you're seeing high numbers.
There's an option to use Vulkan. Try it both ways.
Did you customize Theater View at all?
Try this thread for ideas: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,24031.350.html Work through it in reverse order.
Video driver maybe.
-
Thanks @JimH.
I tried Vulcan but it was worse. The GPU was pegged at 100%.
The only customisations I have in Theater view are some menu changes and some custom background images. Removing all background images reduced utilisation maybe 5% so no real fix there.
I went through the "Wierd and Wonderful" list. There were 2-3 entries that might be relevant but the fixes were mainly to update drivers which I have already done.
I also tried reducing the frame rate from 60fps to 30fps in the driver. This reduced utilisation by 10% which is a small win but not enough.
I am starting to think there is not going to be a solution to this problem apart from a hardware upgrade which is a bit frustrating.

Did you configure Windows Defender?
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114101.0.html
Don't use other antivirus.
The latest video driver may not be the best.
Avoid any configuration of the driver.

I have the same CPU, same integrated graphics and the same result on high GPU usage. Just running the menu's is 60-70 %. Having said that it still runs ok and does not hang or cause problems.

Try toggling the Video setting for hardware acceleration.
