Title: Windows 11 Playback Problem
Post by: TopDownDriver on November 04, 2022, 02:11:38 pm
Dedicated system.  Windows 11 - 8gb ram, 512HD.

Only program is MC30.  Audio will occasionally start stuttering and then MC30 quits.  Windows is still fine.  Sounds like a buffer issue.

Any ideas on how to diagnose?

What are you playing?

Where is it located?

To what device?

Playing music off of a NAS (44.1 - 192k, some multichannel music)
Playing over HDMI direct into an audiophile processor (Theta Digital)

That's the basics...

One of the connections may be over-saturated or unavailable from time to time.  Or switching formats causes a problem

Try a test of only 16 bit 44.1 Khz files.

Or try converting everything to 16/44.1 on playback, by using DSP Studio > Output format.

Try updating the NAS firmware.

So, you don't believe it is a lack of memory?  8gb should be enough?

I will check the various formats and the stress on the ethernet line.

My system is set up in a fashion similar to TopDownDriver:
NAS -> dedicated media computer with MC28/ Windows 11 -> Theta pre-pro via HDMI for video
NAS -> dedicated media computer with MC28/ Windows 11 -> USB/ SPDIF converter -> Theta pre-pro for audio

I rarely have that trouble with Red Book audio, and the only time I remember it happening is when I was using my other computer via wi-fi and our network was busy.  I don't think it's ever happened with my ethernet connection to my media computer.  When my audio has hiccupped, MC didn't crash.  I also don't have trouble with video hiccupping.

That said, I have very few hi-rez audio files.  Is there any place TopDownDriver and I can look to see where we may have differences in our settings or playback options to help diagnose his trouble?

Fresh install and restore worked flawlessly. However, on 2 different systems I am getting excessive (>30 secs) buffering on radio stations and sporadic freezes/unresponsiveness for a few moments or up to forcefully terminating MC. This on Win11 21H2 and 22H2.

We're seeing some weird problems with Windows 11 recently. Please use the thread linked below and provide details on what your setup is and how you're playing.

Was a bad audio driver.  Updated driver and all seems fine (fingers crossed).

I'm still using Media Center 29, which had been working flawlessly UNTIL the latest Windows 10 (stealth) upgrade.  Now, I get the following error prompt: "Playback could not be started on the output ‘Wasapi’ using the format ’48 kHz 2ch’.  The mixing format of your hardware does not support the current output format.  Please use the ‘Output Format’ tool in DSP Studio to convert to the mixing format listed below.  Sample rate – 44100 Hz, Channels – 2, Bits per sample – 32."  I followed the instructions and it did NOT solve the problem.  In fact, the DSP Studio menu options no linger align with the suggested settings.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling JRiver and, again, nothing happened.  My sound card works with all other applications, so there's no issue there.  It appears that [major] Windows updates can disrupt how JRiver functions.  My first choice is to fix the problem, but my patience is wearing thin and I'm starting to look for alternatives. That said, I have a HUGE music archive -- all files labeled with field details and accompanying album graphics.  Such details never translate to other applications, so my first choice BY FAR is to salvage JRiver.  Would an upgrade to Media Center 30 accomplish anything?  I tend to doubt it.  Any suggestions?  PLEASE...?
Title: Media Center will not play files. NOT Windows 11
Post by: KyleKD on November 06, 2022, 02:55:19 pm
Have been using Media Center since version 25 with zero problems.

A couple days ago with Ver 29 it just stopped playing music files. (I only use it for music on HTPC) I push the play button and it changes to the pause button, but the song is not playing. The timer stays at 0:00. I can push pause and stop and play and the buttons act normal, but the timer stays at 0:00 and it does not play. I can move slider to any time of the song and it just stays there like it is paused, but it is on play. Have tried direct play from a file and the same thing. Have tried WAV, MPS and FLAC as those are what my files are.

Have upgraded to Ver 30 since and it is the same thing. Have shut off all anti virus and firewalls and it did not help. I have done a full uninstall, restart and reinstall and it did not help. It worked perfectly one day, came back the next day after work and it did not work.

Log attached, but nothing it it means anything to me. Anybody know what is wrong?

I am using Windows 10. I have checked everyting listed under playback problems and nothing has solved the issue. When I push play, the file does not play and time stays at 0.

Maybe your audio output setting is messed up and it’s not sending to the right output?

and what sound output setting?  ASIO, WASAPI, Direct Sound.  Try another one.

Earlier I was attempting to listen to an SACD ISO and it was stuttering really bad. I changed the output so that bitstreaming was enabled and the play restarted and was fine. I attempted to change it back to no bitstreaming but then everything also played fine. Windows 11, ASIO, external DAC, MC 30.

If you're not DSD bitstreaming, MC is converting the SACD ISO (DSD) to PCM on-the-fly and those type of conversions can be very resource intensive.

If you're experiencing stuttering/dropouts while doing that on-the-fly conversion this usually means your PC hardware isn't fast enough to handle it (as would be the case with older/lower end PC hardware). In those cases and if your DAC supports it enabling DSD bitstreaming is the best option to avoid that DSD to PCM conversion.
