Title: locked folder: Windows bug or MC problem?
Post by: comox on January 14, 2023, 12:23:00 pm
This issue has existed for many years.

When I rename and move a collection of files MC attempts to delete the now empty source folders.

About 50% of the time there remains 1 empty folder that MC was unable to delete.  Attempting to delete that folder with Windows Explorer confirms it is in use by MC and Windows will not permit it to be deleted. The solution is to exit MC, delete the folder, and restart MC.

I have tried everything I can think of without success to avoid this problem including:
- clearing playing now
- navigating away from the folder in MC Drives and Devices and then refreshing the view
- playing a different file outside of the source folder hierarchy

Assuming it's not a Windows bug, it would be wonderful if you could fix this because I run into it several times a day and it's a pain.

See if you can get a log.  Take a look at the end of the log to see what may be happening.

It's very easy to reproduce this.

1) Import a collection of files contained in a hierarchy of folders.
2) Tag the files using a Drives & Devices view.
3) Play a few of the audio, data, and image files while tagging.
4) F6 (Rename and Move) the files using the tags from a pane view.

About 25-50% of the time one empty folder (often down a few levels from the root) will be left behind.
Windows Explorer cannot delete the folder because it is in use by MC.
MC is also unable to delete the folder manually from Drives & Devices.

Exit MC and Windows Explorer is then able to delete the folder.

Did you try the log?

No but I did check my anti-virus.

Logging now turned on and waiting for next event.

I doubt an error will be reported in the log because MC seems to be confused about which folders it still has open. Otherwise it wouldn't fail when attempting to manually delete the rogue folder via Drives & Devices. Or maybe this is a Windows bug.
