Title: Apparently Id needs to be reimaged
Post by: pkfeldman on February 19, 2023, 04:16:45 pm
My Id stopped working today and a few attempts I made to fix it seem to have bricked it. I would like to download a repair image on my PC, put that on a USB drive, then plug that into the Id and boot against that and reimage my Id. The problem is that the latest repair image seems to be MC25 whereas my Id is running MC29, and the MC25 link doesn't even work. What is the best way forward - do I need to return the Id to JRiver to have them reimage it?

Is it an IdPi or an IdNUC?

It’s an IdNUC — NUC7JY.

Does the Id not boot anymore then? Do you see any text on the screen if you try to boot it with a monitor attached?

Yes, I have a monitor and keyboard/mouse setup. When I boot now, the monitor first shows the NUC splash, then a blue boot screen, then black. When it gets to the black background screen, it reports:

/: clean, 86085/1949696 files, 1109711/7788288 blocks
/sbin/init: error while loading shared libraries: libseccomp.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I’m fairly sure it’s bricked. Can I send the unit back for another Id? What would it cost me incrementally for you to image an Id on a NUC11 with 2 TB of space instead of another refurbished NUC7? Is that possible?

Did you try opening it and checking that everything is seated and cables all connected?

Same problem?

No, I can’t get past the error message I posted earlier when I try to log in. I could try putting an image on a USB drive and interrupting the boot with F10 and running it, but the most recent image available seems to be MC25, but my Id is running MC29. Should I use the MC25 image and then update MC after it’s back up and running?

Please download the "Seatools Bootable" image and burn it to a USB key on a PC.
Put it in the Id and Hit F10 to boot it.
Run the drive tests and report back.
Thanks.

It will not boot off the USB drive. When I hit F10 and then choose "System Setup", there's an option to boot off of the USB first, which I checked and saved, and also switched from Windows to Linux, but subsequent reboots go to the same error above, whether I F10 and choose System Setup, or just let it boot. It seems it shouldn't need the F10 interrupt if it's set to boot off USB media first. I tried it in 3 different USB ports on the Id and got the same result.

Did you check inside to make sure everything is seated and connected?

Are both UEFI and Legacy boot modes enabled in the bios?

I don't see an option related to legacy boot mode. All the options in Visual Bios appear to fall under UEFI. How do I set that please?

On my NUC it's under "Boot Order" UEFI and Legacy
Remind me which model you have?
I find it suspicious that you don't see the usb key.
If you put it into another computer does it show up with the label "SeaBoot" ?

Ok, getting further - I got the USB drive setup as a SEABOOT and it worked on the Id. I now get to a linux prompt that says tc@box: $

pwd returns "/home/tc"

I have a NUC7JY.

What do you mean below by "run the drive tests"? How do I do that please?

Does the Seagate utility have tests available?

Documentation is here:  https://www.seagate.com/content/dam/seagate/migrated-assets/www-content/support-content/downloads/seatools/_shared/downloads/100869623_B.pdf

Do an ls command to see what's on the USB stick.  Then ./[name of tool] to start it.

Everything is seated and connected. It ran fine for 3 weeks and then suddenly died. There was no drop or physical hit to the unit etc.

when I do an "ls" command from the root, I see some directories but don't know how to switch to the USB drive. Basic question but how do I do that? I downloaded SeaTools for linux and added it to the boot USB, but don't know how to cd to it.

You shouldn't have to do any command line stuff. It has a GUI menu.
Are you certain you downloaded the correct tool? There are several on that page.
Here is a direct link.

cd changes directories

on Windows you would use a backslash, but on Linux, you use a forward slash (/)

cd /etc  for example
or
cd /bin

and Linux is case sensitive.

The instructions are linked above.

Yes, I definitely downloaded the right version, and it has a GUI but it does not include the option to do drive tests. The GUI has three large button options, all of which take me through to a linux command line.

there is a command line option where I should be able to run "SeaChest_GenericTests" but it can't find that file and when I cd to / and run "find . SeaChest_GenericTests" it spits out files for a few minutes and comes back with nothing.

It seems like the video driver isn't loading when you run it on your NUC (I was trying it on an older NUC).
Let me check for a different tool.

Might have to use a manufacturer specific tool. What is your drive vendor?

No idea, the product code on the bottom of the box is BOXNUC7CJYH1.
Regulatory Model: NUC7JY
Board S/N: GEJY05000BTY
Date of Manufacture: 12 / 2020

Can you ascertain the drive vendor from any of that?

I'm going to PM you about that since you had more than one.
