Title: JRiver won't start, spinning wheel for hours
Post by: struct on March 31, 2023, 05:13:28 am
Hi,

I am not sure what I have done.  Strangest problem in 10 years.  I can't get MC30 (latest) to start.  All I get is the spinning wheel.  I have unistalled, restarted, reinstalled, updated graphics card, restarted, reinstalled, started in safe mode.

Still no beans.

I am not sure what I did to the machine around this time that might have caused this issue.  I can't get MC to start.

JRiver seems to have 100's of "JRiver Web Application"'s running and hundreds of "Microsoft Edge Webview2" instances running.

I would rather not reinstall Windows, but I am getting close.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Anti-virus?

Doesn't seem to be.  I only default windows anti-virus and turning off protection doesn't seem to help. Disabling firewall doesn't help.  I know AV might still be it, but not sure how to turn off more of it.

Why would JRiver open hundreds of the Webview instances etc?  It is like it is stuck in a loop, continually opening something.

Thanks

If we fail to start, the next startup we should show a dialog that allows the views to be reset.  That would be worth a try.

Please install this version.

Read and follow the advice in the Windows Defender thread.

Try starting Task Manager via ctrl+alt+del, then Processes, then search for JRiver, then select all and right click end task.

Hi,

I have read the defender thread and added exceptions.  I have run MC30 (I was already on the latest version) and disabled 3rd party apps etc after killing MC30 in task manager.  I have run it with security disabled.

Screenshot of MC creating hundreds of instances of itself is attached.

Still no luck getting it to launch.

What is the full version?  Latest can mean two things.

Is it a really low power machine?  You've got a couple more things using a lot of CPU.

Anything unusual about the installation?

Hi,

Thanks for following up again.

Latest is 89 from the board.

Windows 10, latest updates.  i74930k CPU with GTX980.  By no means cutting edge, but not low powered.  Machine has been running fine for a few years now.  I have clearly done something to it, but I can't think what it is. No new software, maybe a windows update.  I am checking with other family members just in case others have fiddled with it.  All other software is fine.

CPU is high because MC is stuck in a loop opening hundreds of instances (369 this morning before I killed it) and it seems to open a Microsoft Edge Webview2 instance for each of those. JRiver Web Application exists about 6 or so times (more than I recall).  Is it Edge and MC not playing nice?

I was on MC29 when this happened.  I thought it might be something not playing nice with the library, which is hosted on a VM on a QNAP.  But changed to MC30 and using the default library options, still is not launching.

I fixed it.

I renamed the %appdata% jriver directory and reinstalled.  MC was working as usual.  Went back and found a working library and restored.  Seems happy enough again.

Corruption in a library file?
