Media Center 9.0.119 beta is available.
Many things will crash and not work. If that worries you, please wait for a couple of weeks.
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90119.exe
Changes
1. Changed: mp2 extension is now associated with MPEG 2 video files instead of MPEG 1 Layer 2 audio files.
2. Fixed: InstallWizard was changing file associations.
3. Fixed: Track Info plug-in was displaying lyrics information for both notes and lyrics.
4. Changed: Encoding options are back in the main options dialog.
5. NEW: Added "encoding for" selection to encoding options dialog.
6. Changed: Date + Time fields no longer show seconds when displaying. (to reduce clutter)
7. NEW: Added EXIF parsing / display for JPEG's. (look at "Format" properties pane)
8. Changed: Property list now uses "<too many items to list>" if there are more auto-complete items than a system combobox can safely handle.
9. Changed: Improved several browser performance bottlenecks with large libraries.
10. Changed: Added extra layer of security / error checking to library saving.
11. Fixed: MC would resave its database after load -- causing an unnecessary slowdown.
12. Fixed: MC would save its database twice on close -- again, causing a slowdown.

SlideShow no longer works ?
I did an uninstall/reinstall .. just to make sure everything was cleaned up ... and when I install the SLIDESHOW plugin ... It installs, and works (if embedded into a visualization like DJ 4 Mod), but it isnt on the list of visualizations (None, Images, Visualizations, Track Info) ... but no SLIDESHOW .. .
Isnt this your own product ? How do I get it back in the list ?

EXIF... Cool!
But now that I can view the metadata, what will MC let me do with it? Can I use it to create playlists?

Hi
No problems with the show, but when right clicking in Slide Show field I got five lines, following after Display Plugin, which you can't read. They appears like staples.
You understand? I should like to paste an image of it but I don't know how. I have seen this before in another build.

1)Clicking a *.rm link downloads the file instead of streaming it. If I cut and paste the link in to "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.
Clicking on a *.ram link does nothing. Again, if I cut and paste it into "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.
BOTH file types are registered under MC9 in IE Folder options.
2)Direct Sound only outputs to the front two channels bypassing the Audigy Surround Sound and digital effects software. If I attempt to use the MC9 DSP effects and JRSS, it does map to all of my 4 channels, but sounds like crap -- lots of crackling.
3)ASIO crashes about a minute into an internet audio stream (MP3 web radio), or if you click on another link while playing a stream.

Still having problems with YADB/CD insert notification -
Here's what I do:
1. place cd into tray and close tray
2. Analyzing devices dialog appears
3. Attempting to connect to YADB dialog appears
4. Track list (in background) is updated with proper album/artist info
5. dialog appears that states connection to YADB has failed.
6. XP presents a dialog that states the Media Core has caused an exception and prompts me to send the report off to redmond (where its unlikely to be answered, I suppose )
7. Media Center disappears
Now - when I restart MC, with the previous cd still in the tray, MC does not contact YADB to lookup the album for me - so I can rip that cd. However, when the rip cycle ends, if I click the 'ok' on the dialog box and enter a new cd to be ripped, I go through the above scenario again.
This time, I turned off the 'Enable on-line CD lookup' option on the cdrw - still have the problem, instead, it happens right after CD insert happens. So, I'm don't think its a YADB issue and more with XP and cd insert notification. I even went out and bought a new CDRW tonight and have the same problem.
Here's my info:

The converter forces "[ARTIST]/[ALBUM]" directory naming which un-does directoy changes made to compilation albums to get them into the "multiple artists" category.
It's also still having problems with UNC destination directories.

EDIT
- works ok when editing a single file (not via properties)
- painfully (and I really mean painfully) slow if I edit through properties although it seems to be only on some fields, namely the 'Name' field
- freezes in properties after two or three changes
RIPPING
- fails with a 'Read track failed. Unknown error = 1' message although the cd I'm trying to rip, plays ok through
** WORKING AS OF RELEASE 9.0.116 **
although still getting problems connecting to YADB
- always getting 'No Audio Tracks to copy' message
See 'Can't Rip CD' topic
OPTIONS
- Device Settings/Type is greyed out. Only 'Auto Config' is available
TRACK INFO TEMPLATES
Displaying 'Notes' on various templates show the lyrics instead of notes
** WORKING AS OF RELEASE 9.0.116 **
ENCODING
- Converting from WAV to another format does'nt delete the original WAV file even though the appropriate checkbox is checked
CD LABELLER
- rotates the image by 180 degrees
- does'nt print the image

Hmm... is it just me, or is Audio Analyser more stable and more memory tight?
However, MC, which is not playing anything, has fluctuated between 5MB and 12MB of memory while analysing (mainly closer to 12MB). I hope this is not part of a leak......
At any rate, I'm happier:)
Thanks guys!
P.
-
Hmm... in the last 25 songs or so, MC seems to have taken up a further 3MB of memory...
-
Generally a great job. Thanks - and MS is working perfectly.
One issue (so far): MC insists on setting own file associations whatever you input manually.
Example: Tools>Options>File Associations, select 'None', all boxes unchecked. Then manuallay select one file type (say, APE). That type appears in the dialogue at the top. Select OK (Always take control of that file type is checked). When you return to File Associations, m3u and mpl are added to the dialogue.
If you then conduct a search of the drive with those settings in place, MC returns additional file types that are not selected in File Associations: jpg, bmp, etc.
The import process hangs forever scanning a 250G drive. Task Manager shows 100% CPU usage and @ 41K in memory utilization.

OH!
Unless someone has fixed something recently and didn't report the bug fix, here is a bug for you to correct:
A custom visualisation that is stored directly under the "Visualisations" folder will cause MC to crash when it is displayed.
After an uninstall and a resinstall, I created the same vis. and put it in a different folder and it seems to be happy now.
I hope that helps you narrow down where the elusive bug would be!

Auto Install - THANKS!!
This is great for doing upgrades.
Can you please explain what it means by:
Auto install after 30 second time out?
It seems to just auto install it and do an upgrade but I dont know what it means by the 30 second time out part.
It's really unclear.
Plugin's - It download then installs them fine but then instantly crashes after it's finished installing them.

Unable to burn a audio CD with this version. Hangs on the last song. The CD plays on a CD player, hangs after the last song though. Worked fine in previous versions.

Thanks for thr EXIF info, I know Jim said the other day that it might not make it in for a while so it was a nice little surprise. One small request, could the EXIF info show the date and time fields for when the pic was taken. I'm not sure if it covers all the fields but the plugin for Irfanview has a nice selection of information.

Watch TV does not work:
after 'starting TV' it reads unknown error.
Installed latest WDM drivers for WinTV Primio.
Before, it was never working correctly but the behaviour
changed over the various Jukebox versions.
- Only the error message
- The TV channel with the error message, after confirming the error, the channel was lost.
- The channel without sound.
On the same configuration the SW FreeTV runs without problems since ever.
Any ideas ? Are you still working on the WatchTV part ?

Curious.. Most previous versions of MC were around 10 - 11 MB in size. The last couple of versions are only around 8 MB. How was that done? A more efficient complier?
-
After each group of YADB lookups get the following error msgs. (http://benali.keystonecop.net/mcmsg.jpg) started with prior version.
I know YADB is ALPHA, so I really am trying to be patient. Maybe all the new things are taking most of your test time. Sure will be glad when you have time to get this back like it was about 3 months ago.

When burning a CD, on song 22 of 23 total, recv'd the following msg:
Invalid field in CDb.
Hit close and then browsed the CD. All songs played properly except 22, which caused a perpetual "buffering..." msg and MC had to be closed abnormally.

2. Fixed: InstallWizard was changing file associations..
Yeah!
Thank You!

1. I had a customized toolbar, and it was deleted with this installation.
(Btw, since MC doesn't have always-on buttons for Playing Now, Media Library, Playlists, etc., I set them up in the toolbar in the same order. I'd suggest that MC be set up that way by default.)
2. When I load a DVD, I see a list like this:
DVD Title 1 (51 chapters)
DVD Title 2 (2 chapters)
...
I haven't seen an answer on this issue. I expected to see an FBI warning followed by a the DVD video menu. Is the display of this list of chapters by design, or does this indicate a problem?
3. When I try to play a DVD (by clicking on DVD Title 1), I get a black screen (in the TV window). Do you have any suggestions on what might be wrong? I've never been able to play a DVD on MC.
4. For the first time, I see the "hairstyle" menu. Very exciting. I love it! :D I'm not sure if the following is because it's still in development or it's by design: I can't select the icons on the right side, and I can't navigate the lists using the initial letter or the Page Down/Up keys.
5. ATI's TV app switches channels instantaneously. Is it possible for MC to do that? (Or is that difficult because MC has to do so many other things...?)
6. Minor issues with the toolbar:
Media Library icon doesn't match.
CD,DVD, & Handhelds is called Devices.
There is no My Computer button for the toolbar.
There is no Plug-ins button that allows you to jump to the Plug-ins item in the tree.
-
New one for me
Adding to the continuing "auto insert" problems with audio cd's, with the build listed below, if the visualisation window is running "full screen" playback becomes very choppy/warbly and seems to speed up/slow down in places too.
Going to give 0.119 a go to see if it's the same or not....
Edit:-
Still the same in this build:(
Display quality settings make no difference to this behaviour.

Feature Request: Would it be possible to add "Always on Top" toggle to the file properties when in window mode?
It's very frustrating when clicking another file in the tree to have the properties window dissapear under the main Media Center window.
-
Overall, I like the cd labeler program, but it needs an option for full bleed layouts. Currently the slightest paper misregistration results in areas left blank. Very common with most consumer printers.
-
::)
Here is something really strange.
When I stard MC, every time, there is a dialoge box that asks me if I would like to scan for media. This is only supposed to happen one time after installing, right?
If I chose "Cancel" then I find that my whole library is gone and I really have to import everything. ?
Onother problem I found: I lose all the "most basic" media information - artist, album, title - that is stored when using the Japanese language. I lose this information if I do a completely new install if MC. I thought this information would be saved inside the music file. I know that - dare I say - WMP does store and retain all Unicode information in a MP3 File. I think something needs to be done with the way that MC stores that basic information so that people who actually use Unicode informatin can feel assured that their basic information is safe should a clean install be necessary.
I will have to go back to the previous build to see if I get something more stable than to first bug I reported.
Keep up the great work!! Hasta!! ;D

Notes: The version in italics was the version being used when the bug was discovered. If it has been reported fixed, it will be struck out (
thus) until confirmed at which time it will be removed. If the bug is noticed in a successive build, the version number will be updated accordingly.
BUGS
- Memo Field Text Entry: 9.0.119 Text field is not given focus when the window opens
- Keywords: 9.0.119 Cannot reproduce "Keywords" behaviour on any other field.
- Keywords: 9.0.119 Keywords entered as "hello; goodbye" are treated as "hello" and " goodbye". Note the leading space on " goodbye".
- Keywords: 9.0.119 Clicking on a keywords-only view scheme, does not add the rule "-keywords=[]" (ie: not empty keywords).
- Keywords: 9.0.119 The rule "-keywords=[]" returns everything in the DB, including tracks with keywords. "keywords=[]" returns nothing.
- Keywords: 9.0.119 When using the wizard to search by keywords, none are listed individually and things like "war; freedom; sixties" are shown as an option, as opposed to "war", "freedom" and "sixties".
- Rename / Keywords: 9.0.119 Renaming keywords in the tree has the effect of adding the renamed keyword to the list with the old keyword still intact.
- Rename: 9.0.119 When renaming in the tree, any semi-colons are ignored. Renaming something to "test; hi" results in "test hi" being saved.
- Duration Field: 9.0.119 Duration is stored as a string and not a value. This means that all sorts, searches etc. are performed stringwise and not according to values. "duration=<60" won't work.
- Duration Field: 9.0.119 Duration shows the number of seconds. Is it not possible to have a minute:second display?
- Smartlists: 9.0.119 I have a smartlist with the following in it: "Limit: 120 minutes". When I click on the playlist, right click and choose play, the list is recalculated and another 2 hours of music is played instead of playing what is visible.
- Playback Filter / Smartlists: 9.0.119 A playback filter that is based on a smartlist is not refreshed after each song. Eg: a filter based on "[Last Played]=<120" won't work because the filtered tracks are never updated.
- Visualisation Studio: 9.0.119 When editing text elements, the new text is only saved when other properties of the element are changed before moving to another element in the visualisation.
- Visualisation Studio: 9.0.119 None of the custom fields work in the display.
- Visualisation Studio: 9.0.119 Any custom visualisations that are placed directly in the "Visualisations" folder will cause MC to crash on displaying them.
- Visualisation Studio: 9.0.119 It is impossible to change the visualisation if MC is not playing anything.
- Top Hits / Recently Played: 9.0.119 Properties for "Top Hits" and "Recently Played" are no longer there.
- Auto Album Analyser: 9.0.119 Albums that have many artists, but are split into multiple directories, are listed under "Single Artist (incomplete)".
- Auto Album Analyser: 9.0.119 Single tracks and tracks with no album specified are listed under "Single artist (incomplete)". A large amount are actually from multiple artist CD's. Consider having a "Single Tracks" entry?
- Audio Analyser: 9.0.119 Has "Media Jukebox" in dialog.
- Audio Analyser / Library Change: 9.0.119 Changing the current library while analysing audio causes MC to crash.
- Audio Analyser 9.0.119 Memory leak still present.
- Library: 9.0.119 When switching libraries, the target quick drop retains its setting from the previously loaded library -- even if the target is invalid.
- Dates / Times: 9.0.119 Inconsistently reported: Date created: "dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss"; Date Modified: seconds since UNIX epoch; Duration: Seconds; Date Imported & Last Played: "xx days, yy hours ago". Please standardise these!
- Ripping: 9.0.119 Only the "original" fields are copied from the CD information to the ripped files. New information such as [Composer], [Keywords] etc. are not copied. It is useful to have this all entered before the album is ripped so that the files can be named properly.
- Keyboard Navigation: 9.0.119 Tab eventually ends up as a cycle between the tree on the left and the search bar when viewing playlists or media library, and between tree and tracks when in playing now.

REQUESTED FEATURES
- Playlist Properties: This could allow for comments, dates, and other properties to be assigned to playlists.
- Keywords: Allow a custom delimeter for each field. I have a number of fields that are ready for this, but have been implemented with commas and not semi-colons as required by Keywords.
- Audio Properties: Show info regarding mono, stereo.
- Custom Fields: Allow fields to be specific to media type (or simply to be hidden when not required). Eg: Audio files have no height and width properties and so the audio group should not be visible when clicking on an image file. These can be customised in the options group. Perhaps make the groups customisable in this respect.
- Custom Fields: Separate options dialog, please!
- Custom Field Groups: I would like to have more field groups to extend the existing "General", "Extended", "File Info", "Audio" and "Display". Eg: Publishing Info, Classical Info, Recording Info. etc.
- Views: Allow different columns / thumbnails to be displayed. Should be allowed to be customised. Also allow a "thumb tile" to be displayed, HTML style.
- File Properties: Allow a custom order of fields. eg: name, artist and album to appear first, and not just rely on alphabetical ordering.
- Party Mode: I would like party mode to be ABSOLUTELY dummy proof. You should run experiments with people who don't know what a computer is and are drunk as lords. A challenge! See how many times the play list can change in five minutes...
- Actions for Enter: Is it not possible to customise the action of enter (like Double click and "play") so that it doesn't have a "I'm going to kill your playlist for you"-type action. Personally, I would set it to "DO NOTHING".
- Options: Centralised options? PLEASE? I would like to be able to do everything from one place. I don't like having to press play so that I can right-click on the visualisation and see the options to customise it there.
- Intensity Levels: Almost all of my classical music fits into Intensity 1 or at a push at intensity 2. Is it not possible to add a few more intensity levels "below" 1? Perhaps shift everything up by 5 to make the range 1 through 10. Or add decimal points?
- Send To / Filter Menus: Please do not list all playlists in a single menu, but rather cascade them according to the tree that they appear in. It makes the task of finding a playlist a lot less daunting.

Here is something really strange.
When I stard MC, every time, there is a dialoge box that asks me if I would like to scan for media. This is only supposed to happen one time after installing, right?
If I chose "Cancel" then I find that my whole library is gone and I really have to import everything.
I too am having this problem, and it just started with this build. Every time I start MC, I get the import media dialog box two or three times (click on cancel and it pops back up).
Any media that I import and any changes that I make to view screens or playlists are not saved when the program is closed.
Tagging seems to be working ok for me.
I've tried the ol' uninstall/clean up/reinstall and it hasn't helped.

The numbers in the "duration" field in content view are screwed up. The first number in duration is looking like some kind of symbol, the other numbers (the seconds) are readable, but not perfect.
In "playing now" when hitting "next" the first song in playlist is still in "focus". The frame of the first song is bold, but I believe it is the current song that should be in focus.
-
Ripped a multiple artist cd.
This is nowhere to find, either under multiple artists complete or incomplete cd's, or under single artists,
in the view scheme album type/album/name
However, if I choose one of the artists in scheme artist/album I can find a specific song from album.

5. ATI's TV app switches channels instantaneously. Is it possible for MC to do that? (Or is that difficult because MC has to do so many other things...?)
There is a problem if you switch channels by using the Channels list window. Try using right-click menu to switch channel. It is fast (instantly).

Since I'm ripping a bunch of new CD's I thought I'd take advantage of the new "Album Artist" behaviour. So, as I'm fixing things like year and genre after the return from YADB, I'm also setting Album Artist to either the track artist or "Various Artist", "Soundtrack", etc. After the rip is complete and I look at the resulting APE file entries, the year and genre corrections are there but Album Artist is blank. I had to go back and re-enter them all. They're also missing from the entries created in the "CD & DVD" section of the media library. I'll set them after the rip from now on but it would be nice if changes made before the rip stuck.

Hello,
Since build 116 or so, the "Current" color parameter in the Mega-Me main.xml file section <LIST> seems to have no effects.
I like to have the current playing song detail line displayed in a different color !
Also as others have reported, custom fields don't display in Visualisation studio and Track Info pages.

Unable to burn a audio CD with this version. Hangs on the last song. The CD plays on a CD player, hangs after the last song though. Worked fine in previous versions.
Could you post your system info here (from MC's help menu)?
Thanks,

Hello,
Big bug as previously reported by simpleuser99 :
When I stard MC, every time, there is a dialoge box that asks me if I would like to scan for media. This is only supposed to happen one time after installing, right?
Just installed 9.119 on a new machine (1st install) with Win2K and library files (*.jmd) are not created as they should. Only the curplaylist.jmd gets created. As a result, each time I restart MC the "scan for media" popup comes back and the previously imported medias are gone !
That's strange since Yesterday I Upgraded from 0.116 to 0.119 on my main home computer and all worked fine.
Also Library/Backup does not work, it give an error : 'Library backup failed' but I guess it's a side effect of the *.jmd files not created.

A little update on the previously reported problem:
I uninstalled .119 from my brand new computer, installed .118, imported some files in a new library (the *.jmd files were created ok) then upgraded from 118 to 119, all went Ok.
Except that It seems impossible to create a new library with 119 using the library manager even when cloning from a working one !

MP3 Encoder freezes using .119 in the process of trying to RIP a CD. Copying is fine, the encoding however freezes. This occures when trying to rip to a shared location on the LAN via using a *UNC path* Mapping a drive letter to the same UNC location and ripping to the mapped drive is fine. However, ripped database file pointers are hardcoded with the drive letter/location for the files. This used to work in previous versions (.113) and does not work now. I suspect it is not necessarily a MC9 problem but rather the encoder plugin?
Any ideas will be gre8tly appreciated!!!

I have the last track problem when burning too, have had it in various versions in the past. In my case it only happens when the there is all of the recording time is used. For example on 80 minute recordings a playlist of 1:18 will record fine a playlist of over 1:19 will usually hang on the last song.

That could be your burner's limitation. Check for new firmware.

Hello,
The audio analysis of an mpc file while playing another mpc file crashes MC with an error of type : MPC-Plugin, broken frame... Analysis of mp3 while playing mp3 is Ok.
(MPC plugin version 2.015 with MC9.0.119)
BTW the new MPC plugin for MC works like a charm (playing and APE tagging) you did a great job Matt & Steve, thanks :)
