Title: Shellac records.... any real interest?
Post by: antenna on July 10, 2023, 01:59:50 am

Back in the day, my parents' friends used to give me their old 78's because, as they said, I like music and they said I would take care of the music the records contained.

OK, I look at a prior effort to digitize those shellac records and put them in an appropriate playlist.  And it got a whopping 3 likes.

So, I have to ask is it worth me creating other playlists to highlight the music on these 78's?

Would anyone really be interested?

Or should I just go with...

Donate 78s.  We have 200,000 78s, but we are always looking for more.  We will digitize your collection and preserve the physical discs for the long term. To get the process started please read this page.

Likes and listens are two different things.

With that said, I make playlists for myself even though I share them on Cloudplay.  I would think you'd have an interest in digitizing these for your own self and preservation of a medium no longer available (though there are some companies doing a good job with older recordings).

After doing that, for storage space alone, you may have an interest in moving the 78s to an organization that preserves them.

Good listening.

I think it depends on what is on the 78s

I would be interested in any OTR radio shows, and anything WWI And WWII related.

many people may have no interest in Sherlock Holmes, Boston Blackie, Old War news, etc...

Dawgincontrol and KingSparta ---

Many thanks for your comments.  So much sage advice in response to my question.

Currently, I'm only about halfway through digitizing my vinyl, so I have that task ahead of me whilst I consider what to do with the shellac I've accumulated.

Sincerely, thank-you for your advice.

Here's a Hoffman forum thread that covers a bunch

I've personally used some Frog Label Records, and Past Perfect cds.

My Gennet Jazz playlist came from JSP Records (though I got it on Discogs).  Give you a sample of the sound.

My pleasure.  Always glad to help a fellow music fan who crosses genres.

I remember the comment from old TV (circa 1960's?).

Spending some time in a search engine...
