Title: Feature Request - MC Client for Smart TV's
Post by: reinhars on September 08, 2023, 11:39:40 am
Hi all,

I like to know if you are maybe working on an Client for smart TV? I like to stream all my stuff which is located on a central MC server to my TV's like Netflix does (Theater View in my TV would be great). So are you having any plans to realize such a Client? Answer really appreciated for my upcoming spending plans for hard- and software.

Thanks and regards

Reiner

With MC31 online.... these are what's on my wish list...
NITL:
...
- Fully functional MC Android App / Tv Client with Theater View UI.

A full blown Theater View style (android) smart tv app seems to be too complex to develop. What's currently being offered is "JRiver for Android", which is basically just the JRiver Panel interface  :(

The only real way to get MC Theater View on a Tv is via hdmi connected Windows box. Maybe Linux/Mac, I wouldn't know, never touch 'em.

It's not Panel any longer.  JRiver for Android was re-written about a year ago.

I'm assuming that this product isn't really intended for set top boxes or for Smart TVs.  This is a distinct difference in the JRiver ecosystem as compared to Kodi, Plex, and others.  In those other ecosystems, all of the "big complex things" are done on the server.  The clients are just a way to play things with no real ability to edit or organize.

I'm assuming that JRiver will not be adopting the Plex, Kodi, etc style and that, to really use MC as a home theater system, one will always need a real computer with a desktop operating system as the playback device.

From this standpoint, the JRiver Android product does not address the same needs as the clients in these other ecosystems.  It (seemingly) has a different intended purpose, which is for mobile use; not set top box.

I'm using JRiver for Android on an Android TV, a Sony Bravia KD-32W800.

I think more people would be inclined to try it if some landscape screen shots of the latest version were posted, including:

Video > Tv Guide
Video > Shows > Series
Video > Shows > Series > select a Series >
Video > Shows > Series > select a Series > select a show from the list
Video > Movies
Video > Movies> select a movie
Audio > Artist
Audio > Artist > Albums
Audio > Artist > Albums > select an album

Do you watch video content from MC using that Android client?  I was not aware that was a capability of JRiver for Android.  The screen shots certainly make it seem like it is an audio only interface.

Those are the only ones I have seen.
