Interesting discussion of why Dolby Atmos doesn't work sometimes:

Cables and devices must all support HDMI 2.1, and some Android devices don't.

In general, Dolby Atmos should work fine with HDMI 2.0. It does not require 2.1 except for eARC (return channel) and for 4K/8K resolutions at 120fps/60fps. So HDMI 2.0 should be fine for Dolby Atmos Music. And, yes, all components in the signal path have to support Dolby Atmos.

no matter what I do or how i configure MC 33, it won't play Atmos or TrueHD sources on all source channels. NVIDIA using Direct Sound Option in MC 33
output device Windows 11 NVIDIA TRX 4070 connected to Anthem AVM; Output Decoding in MC 33; Dolby Digital (The max option is 5.1, if i uncheck Output Formatting it turns it back on and down mixes the Video TrueHD or Atmos source to Stereo.
If i turn on output formatting back on and set DSP to Source Channels, it overrides this and flips it back to 2 channels!
This what i have figured out to get it to work...
1. Output formatting = Source Channels
2. Bit Streaming = HDMI
4. Device Settings = Default Number of Channels
5. Device NVIDIA = Direct Sound
This works with Both TrueHD AND Atmos
