I noticed that one of the recent builds converted the tagging for APE/APL files to APEv2. I haven't tried a MC build since 088, and am getting the itch to try another one.
However, what happens to my tags if I need to go back to MJ8? I assume all the tags on the files will be upgraded automatically if I move to MC. Is APEv2 backwards compatible with v1?
What options do I have if they are not backwards compatible?
Finally, is there a list somewhere that details what data is stored in which kinds of tags and which data is stored only in the MJ/MC database? It would help to know what information I'm putting at risk... :)
Best,
Brad

For MP3's
I do know that going from MC to MJ8 the tags are not compatable and somethings will be lost.
going from MJ8 to MC9 everything is comverted fine

It was sort of supposed to be, but the APEv1 tag parser in Monkey's Audio won't load APEv2 tags because the tag version is newer and it's not sure what that means. (MJ/MC uses the same APE tagging code that Monkey's Audio uses)
So, once you switch to APEv2, you sort of have to stay there.
The MJ 8 APE plugin probably won't be updated because MC 9 is a lot better all around for APE files.
Thanks Brad.

That's kind of what I figured. I'm actually anxious to move to MC9 and start working on remote control of it like I've been doing to MJ8...but that's another thread.
Anyway, to sum up:
1) Once I go to MC9, all my APE tags are updated to v2
2) The updated tags aren't usable in MJ8 (& won't be, that's cool)
So what information will I lose if I have to go back to MJ8 (assuming I still have a usable MJ8 library)? Will MJ8 re-create APEv1 tags for all the files if the MJ8 library is good? Clearly, it's the potential for data loss I'm worried about. I'd hate to redo over 8000 APL files....
Best,
Brad

Since you're using CUE+APL, maybe make a quick backup of all your APL files -- they'll probably fit on one CDR.
However, if you have the library (and filenames), MJ 8 should be alright.
Also, tags won't be automatically updated in MC 9 -- they'll only change once you make changes. You *could* also make the APL files read-only until you're comfortable with MC 9...

.
:'( And if we can't buy MC9 ? Are we MJ8 users get second place on the preference? I mean don't even get support for new Plugins?

Thanks for the tips, Matt! After my last post I realized that I could burn all those APLs without too much trouble. The read-only trick will probably be how I start.
Thanks again!
