Title: Matt: Discussion about Track# 0x/x
Post by: Marty3d on February 12, 2003, 01:00:10 pm
I didn't have the chance to reply to your question about why I wanted MC to show Track 01 instead of Track 1.

Top three reasons:
1. Old habit. Sometimes, sorting in some programs are 1, 10, 11, 2, 3... I know MC doesn't do that, but there are different schools about sorting.
2. It looks nice, see this example:
01
..
08
09
10
in comparision to
1
..
8
9
10
11 ...messy! :)

3. Principals. If I before importing my files to MC have tagged them (not only physical filename, but ID3v2 tagged them), why be obtrusive and let MC retag them without my approval? Would you like MC to re-tag Artist field as well? Q-Tip? Nah I'll rename that one to Cutie-P. Michael Jackson? Well, he's new name is Mikael Jansson, because he probably would be called that if he lived in Sweden!

Hope you see why I'm on your back on this one :)

/Martin

MC shouldn't touch the tags from a simple import -- only if something changes.  If it does, it's a bug and we'll fix it.

Also, MC never displays numbers with a leading 0 in it's columns -- regardless of what the tags say. Is it possible this is all that's happening -- the display, not the tag is different? This could be made optional if enough people want it.

Thanks Martin.

Thanks for listening Matt!

Check this one, taken from 9.0.110:

So, MC SOMETIMES show the leading 0...which I like, since I tagged them that way :)

And I checked a file tagged, imported and modified today. In tag&rename, the track number was 01, after importing the file to MC, I checked again and it had changed to 1... so unfortunately MC retagged it! Btw, I always import through Explorer..right-click - MC - Import.

Thanks again for getting your attention :)

I'm using 9.0.88 and it displays the leading zero if that's how it is in the tag.

I think an option for track numbers would be nice.

It would have these options:

I definitely prefer the leading zero.

That's sort of a bug that a number field is ending up with leading 0's after an import.

And we'll look at tags changing after an import.

Thanks.

I have to admit, I'm so used to seeing the leading zero that I miss it when looking in MC9. Not a big deal, really, just a thing.

We may add more fancy field display options someday that allow leading 0's and right-alignment and the like.

Until then, hopefully the way MC displays numbers isn't a deal breaker for anyone...

I also vote for the leading zero but could see an implication if people use HUGE playlists that contain >99 tracks... How would 100 in a xx with leading zero sorting solution look and appear...

Then again I dont have any >99 playlists but I am just considering...

Thanks Matt! I'm looking forward to both MC leaving my tags and someday be able to see the leading zero :)

Chalk me up as a "leading zero" fan too.

Not a deal-breaker, no, but it would be nice to have the choice, and given the choice, I'd definately use it:)

I keep the leading zero in my tags because I burn CD-Rs to play in my car's CD/CD-R player. It reads ID3v1 tags and it treats the track # field as text.  With no leading zero, it plays tracks in the order 1,11,12,13,14,2,3,4 etc.  (An annoyingly poor design by the manufacturer.)  I have no playlists > 99 tracks.  Thus, I would prefer no to have the zero truncated when writing tags.

Not a deal breaker because I don't make often make CD-Rs for my car anymore and I can use Tag&Rename if its ever an issue.

As for display within MC9, it seems like the track # column should be right justified. That way all the one's digits would line up correctly.

Similarly, other number fields such as seq number, bit rate, file size, duration, etc. would look better if they were right justified.

BUMP...

I was searching for info on this exact issue I'm having.  The leading zero's seem to remain after importing but as soon as I make a change to file in MC like change the rating it rewrites the tag removing my leading zero.  Really wish I could stop it from happening.

Maybe this has been addressed in a newer version.  Any feedback?

Thanks

Doesn't matter how many entries in a playlist. This is dealing with the track number from the CD/Album. Not many CDs have > 99 tracks.
