Title: Decode DSD Master hybrid files from BitPerfect for MC playback?
Post by: eapfoto on January 17, 2024, 06:53:50 pm
Hello. I have a bunch of DSD albums from back when I was using iTunes, BitPerfect, and their DSD Master app to create what they called Hybrid DSD files. It's a DSD wrapped in an ALAC that iTunes recognizes, but that BitPerfect software could play natively as DSD to get around the problem of iTunes not recognizing that file type.

http://dsdmaster.blogspot.com/p/what-is-dsd-master.html (last paragraph)

Unfortunately now I can no longer find some of the native DSF or DFF files I used to create those hybrid files. Wondering if I were to send someone smarter than myself one of the hybrid files if they would be able to help get MC to recognize the DSD file embedded within the ALAC and play as such. Probably a long shot, but figured I'd ask. BitPerfect app is now abandonware, which is one of the reasons I've bought JRiver MC.

Thanks!

I've never even heard of or seen these type of files, but I would be very surprised if they even worked in MC as-is, they likely don't (as ALAC in a m4a container isn't a "known" DSD format, etc.).

You might be better off re-sourcing the files in DSF format or if they're from a SACD ISO using sacd_extract/iso2dsd to extract new files.
