Title: m4a playback problem
Post by: Graham849 on April 07, 2024, 03:45:24 am
Recent updates of both Windows 11 and JRiver have broken m4a playback.

I have searched wiki and interact and there are various possibilities which I don't want to implement on a miss until I hit a solution as there would then be extra software installed which may do nothing but use system resources.

I use JRiver in audio mode.

Thanks in advance g

Recent updates of both Windows 11 and JRiver have broken m4a playback.

So, this used to work?

Of course, I tried this for the first time today, and receive "Something went wrong with playback"

Why do you say it's updates of  "both Windows 11 and JRiver" rather than isolaated to one or the other?

I don't know which update caused the problem, sadly. I have auto update on for both and now m4a playback is broke.

The files still play in windows media player tho so perhaps it is a JRiver plugin problem?

Win10, I'm using 11
I downloaded the first two m4a files listed on the site posted by @tzr916 in Reply #3.  First time I play m4a and they both play fine with:

Win11 Pro (64-bit) Version 23H2, OS Build 22631.3374, Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22688.1000.0 | MC 32.0.34 (currently in beta).

MC shows them as 16-bit 44.1 KHz (see attachments for simple DSP settings).  My attached USB DAC also indicates 44.1 KHz.
Same when I switched to Audio Only Mode.

Exploring these files

First five lines of MC Tree Tag > Tag Dump:

MP4 Audio File (m4a)
44.1 kHz, 130kbps, 2 ch

Replay Gain: -5.26
Tool Name: Lavf57.83.100

MC Tree Tag > File includes fields:
File Type: m4a
Compression: MP4 AAC

The first line of each sample file starts off with a few bytes of human readable text:
   ftypM4A    isomiso2

Downloaded a couple of those M4A files and they play fine on my Windows 11 development box running the latest MC.

Please upgrade to the latest MC.

If it still doesn't work, post the full version of MC that you're using and a log of playback failing.

Thanks.

Thanks Matt, it will be in 24 hrs time as it's bedtime here now. I have spent this evening removing codecs and JRiver 30 and 31. Too tired now to continue.

Thanks all for input. Yes have latest version of JRiver, and updated windows 11 again. No joy.

Decided listening to music was more important than continuing to troubleshoot.

So I have converted 387 files to .mp3, playing well.
