An MPC plugin for MC 9 is now available.
HOWEVER: IT IS A FIRST RELEASE -- AND MAY HAVE SERIOUS FLAWS WHICH COULD RESULT IN TAG AND/OR OTHER DATA LOSS. USE WITH CAUTION!
If you're sure you wish to try it, copy this file to your MC\Plugins directory:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/in_mpc.dll
Then, using Plugin Manager in MC, pick "Add" and add this file.
Again, this is a beta with a first edition of APEv2 tagging. Use it carefully.
Looking forward to any feedback.

ok i think this is a dumb question BUT what is MPC?

Matt, but, but, but this plug in doesnt support ApeV2!. ?

mouseman

search for mpc and you will get hours and hours to read
-
Mouseman,
it is a relatively new lossy format that qualitywise beats mp3 and untill now also ogg.
The downside is that if you are into mobile device, there is no hardware support yet.
But the quality is very transparent vs the original, and file size is about the same as mp3 or less.
here you can check it out some, there are some forums there that deal specifically with mpc:

mpc rykker for vildt
-
I got a lot of little squares... except for name tag.
-
Matt, THANK YOU.
I can listen to mpc fine - only tested two songs, but they were good.
Converted one file - and the file info says there was no tag.
In configuration menu I can only set dithering and noise shaping, average bitrate is greyed out, and there are no taggin options.
-
Changed some comment info in a file, and tag
was changed from ape 1.00 to 2.00 :)
Genre field and album fields are filled out with squares instead of letters
-
Matt, but, but, but this plug in doesnt support ApeV2!. ?
It is v2:

but there is a problem with some tag (album="Bigger, Better, Faster, More" in the db; see also year tag)
-

What were the files with squares originally tagged with?
Does other software read the tags?
Are they fixed if you let MC re-write the tag?
Thanks.

What were the files with squares originally tagged with?
The former mpc input plugin for v.8
Are they fixed if you let MC re-write the tag?
If I rewrite the tag by correcting something in file info, for instance comment field, then hit the X, the squares are not fixed. In some instances there are even more squares by doing that.
-
ok, just found the "tool" button at the lower right (still a bit new to v.9)
If I remove and then update the tag, the squares are gone.
-
Can you send one of the files with X's in it to matt @ jriver.com (no spaces)
The Monkey's Audio APEv2 tag code (used by this MPC plugin) may not handle Trelane's APEv1 tags properly for some odd reason. Could be something else too.
Anyway, if you can send a file, we'll fix it tomorrow.
Thanks!

Rewriting: no.
removing and rewriting: yes.

It works almost perfectly.
Thank you, JRiver.
Now, it's time to buy MC9.0. hehe ;D

When I viewed some MPC files with Tag Frontend for MPC files, I was able to see the tag info as follows.
==============================
D:\Down-EDonk\[WORLD].Pink.Martini.-.Sympathique.(1997).mpc.by.Draconismalificarum\10 - Brazil.mpc
Format: Musepack SV7.0 profile 'BrainDead' (Beta 1.14)
Details: 44100 Hz Stereo, 281 kbps, playtime 05:20
Tag: APE v2.0
Title: Brazil
Artist: Pink Martini
Album: Sympathique
Year: 1999
Track: 10
Genre:
Comment: Rip with EAC
===================
But MC9.0 failed to recognize the info. Moreover, when I tried to modify the blanks in the file info with the MC9.0 tool I coudn't. It showed a "failed to update ~~~" message, which means that I could change the database info but not the tag.
This file was obtained from the edonkey and its tag have already been written by someone who ripped it. I think that he/she might lock the tag info to prevent someone from modifying it for their own purposes. Am I right? ;)
If so, I think MC failes to recognize locked(?) tags.
Could you check this?
Except that, this plug-in works good!!!
-
Just updated the plugin. Download it again and copy it over the existing one.
Fixed the square problem. APEv1 tags written by Trelane's MPC plugin had flags set that weren't supported by APEv1.
The same scary warning from above still applies.
(p.s. files with squares resaved to APEv2 will have to be fixed by hand, since squares are what's really in the tag after that)
-
It is not possible to store cover inside the file :'(
Is it a limitation of APEv2 format or is it a limitation of the plugin ?
-
It is not possible to store cover inside the file
It's a bug with the current Media Center. It'll be fixed next build.
-
Wanted to remove a tag and update it after with your new
version.
MC said it failed in removing the tag.
I then hit the update tag option, and the box said
"1 files updated (1 failures)"
The tag was also still a apre 1.00 tag.
-
but the squares are gone - thats good!

I can't reproduce this, but if you can send me a file it happens on we'll fix it. ( matt @ jriver.com )
Thanks!

Interesting, the above action was done from work, at my laptop.
Same version of MC, same plugin, but on win2000.
Just did it again at my home pc (win xp), and I can't reproduce it here either.
Will check some more.
Will "show average bitrate" reappear in configure or is it gone for good?
-

Probably gone for good. Every other plugin uses a VBR display -- which seems cool. (at least to me)

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the "official" mc9/mpc plugin. It seems to be working quite alright.
It can even import APE1.0 tagged files with "MJMETADATA", thanks, that's nice !
I'm just having a problem with some APE1.0 tagged files that have Custom or Rating fields
(oustide of MJMETADATA)
Anyway those files were not tagged using Trelane's MJ8 plugin !
As for the "show average bitrate", that's Ok with me if it's gone.
Thanks again,
Christian

If there are specific files you're having problems with, email one to matt @ jriver.com with an explanation of the problem, and we'll try to get it fixed.
Thanks.

An updated build of the MPC plugin will be in tonight's build. (fixed handling of APEv2 tags with headers)
Please report any new MPC bugs in the general bug thread from now on.
Thanks.
