Title: Can't run MC 32.0.44, keeps crashing
Post by: andromaya on May 26, 2024, 05:51:48 am
The same thing happened with MC 28, which is why I just upgraded to the latest version of MC.

I attached the full problem report as txt file. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Crashes are usually from antivirus software or drivers.  Occasionally from bad files.

I have tried running it with antivirus disabled and checked that it wasn't my Firewall. Still not running. And I wouldn't know what bad files could be the culprit, I just installed the MC 32 app anew.

What is the antivirus?

Is MC freezing (no response) or crashing (disappears)?

Little update: now MC 28 does run (antivirus enabled), but 32.0.44 keeps crashing on boot. So I bet it's not the antivirus (Avira).

When I try to run MC, it doesn't open and instantly gives me a problem report.

Uninstall the antivirus and reboot a couple times.

Unfortunately this hasn't solved the issue. I've attached the latest problem report.

It crashes/disappears before it can show a window.

Maybe check the app's permissions as mentioned here: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,137894.0.html

That's the first thing I checked... I've tried reinstalling, but now when I open it, I get no response at all (not even a problem report). It this point I'm clueless.

What version of macOS are you using?

What version of macOS are you using?

Sonoma 14.5.

And again, just to be sure, I have just tested MC 28.0.110 and it works just fine.

It's possible your settings files or support files were corrupted.
First download and install the build at the top of the forum. 32.0.45
Next for a clean start, we are going to remove the user files. (Note this will require a license for MC32, there will be no trial period).
Start up terminal session and copy/paste the command below and hit enter.
Code: [Select]
rm ~/Library/Application\ Support/J\ River/Media\ Center\ 32Now run Media Center 32 from the applications directory. Note on first run it will copy your MC28 database and settings and download some support files so give it some time and don't interrupt it.
Enter the MC32 license by using copy/pasting your license key when the splash screen comes up.

Unfortunately this also hasn't worked. The directory in Application Support seems to be removed, but the app still crashes before it can open. MC 28 is still functioning. I've attached the current problem report.

Any new ideas? I've tried uninstalling MC 28, deleting my antivirus, allowing the program through Firewall, running it without an internet connection...

One thing I did notice was that there isn't a MC folder in the Application Support, even after reinstalling.
So I figured that maybe the folder with user files was stored somewhere else to begin with.
Well, after deleting every J River and Media Center folder on the Macintosh HD, and subsequently reinstalling MC 32... it still crashes on boot.

And note that I do have a license, which is what makes it more annoying because I just bought it.

Suggestions?

Pay special attention to the section on permissions. Your crash dumps are very odd. They don't seem to show the program running at all.
Note the files are not under /Library/Application Support they are under the USERS Application Support folder in the USERS Library folder. Don't delete the Media Center 28 one or you lose all of your data.

Again, the permissions were the first thing I checked. MC 32 has all permissions indicated on the forum post mentioned.

And yes, the program crashes before it can properly start.

About the Application Support map: I found it in Users/ Shared/ Library. But there is no Media Center 32 folder in there. I artificially created one (Library/ J River/ Media Center 32) but that hasn’t solved anything.

There isn’t anything else that comes to mind, except for the fact that MC 28 still works. Thanks.

What is under
~/Library/Application\ Support/J\ River
??

I think we solved part of the issue.

I wasn't aware that there is a Library folder in my user folder, because it's actually hidden (as it's supposed to, I've learned from a Google search).
I managed to access it, and indeed there "J River/Media Center 32" was present, meaning that the remove command probably didn't delete it (which is weird in itself).
After having deleted the Media Center folder manually and reinstalling MC 32, finally the Media Center window popped up asking me for my license.

However, after restoring my license, the program instantly crashed again.
I replicated the process (removing Media Center 32 from ~Library/Application Support/J River and afterwards from the bin, reinstalled MC 32, restored the license) and it still crashes (crash report attached).
Again, permissions are all in order, antivirus is disabled, and connections are allowed through Firewall.

At last I got MC 32 running.

I figured that maybe rinsing the entire J River map would solve things (the Media Center 28 map along with the Cache, Lock and Settings folders) would solve things, and it did. Yes, it deleted all data, but I got that backed up.

Thanks for all the support. :)

Just one minor note: restoring the settings of MC28 caused the program to crash again. So for anyone in the same situation, don't restore settings, only media.

When MC32 finds out that it's running for the first time on a machine that had a previous version of MC on it, it pulls in the old data and settings into MC32 and updates the settings to the current version. That explains why the failure dump was so short. It doesn't explain what the problem is. We could use some more info. The process hasn't failed in any of our testing and we haven't had any other user report of this.

Are you saying that you had MC32 running after your trick which prevented it from updating on the fly, THEN you restored the MC28 settings to MC28 and it crashed? Or did you restore the MC28 settings to MC32 and that crashed it??

Thanks for the report.

I had the MC28 folder in the bin, ran MC 32 successfully and restored my media. Then I tried restoring my MC28 settings (on MC32) through the backup as well. MC32 said it needed to restart. And when it tried restarting it crashed in the same way it did before. So I had to reinstall MC32 in order to have it run again. So apparently there’s something particular about the MC28 settings, which didn’t prevent me from running MC28 earlier however (before I deleted it). I will attach the backup file to this post later.

Thanks. If you could just email me your library backup from MC28 (which includes the settings files) that would be great.

If the library is too big the Settings files should do.

Trying to figure out why it's happening but where it's happening is opon handling the cover art filename for some files.

I have noticed upon restoring media that apart from some cover art, a select batch of albums have disappeared from their directory while still appearing in the MC library, though this may be through my own doing (maybe a human fault during converting and redirecting files, but I honestly doubt this).

Restoring the library doesn't touch the media files.

Is this the same library you sent me? I don't get the crash. It looks like something to do with live555

It is the same library, save for a few newly added albums. I could try reproducing the same problem with the original library. I don’t know what live555 is, I googled it and it doesn’t seem like anything I use. My usage of MC is very basic; I have music files on an HDD and I organise and play them directly from the drive through MC. I don’t make use of complex playback mechanisms or servers.

It probably came with some application you installed and it may be the cause of the problem.

Take a look at the software mentioned to see if you recognize anything.

I have deleted VLC, HBO Max and Stremio, and the app still crashes when changing list style to Album Thumbnails. There isn't anything else that comes to mind. I don't necessarily use this Album Thumbnails view by the way, I incidentally clicked on it when I tried changing the list view.

Is it possible that something other than MC added the Cover Art for some of the tracks?

If there is any way of finding out which Albums/Tracks cause MC to crash try deleting the cover art for each album/file and then use only MC or Finder to obtain replacement images.
