Title: Media Center 9.0.105 beta
Post by: Matt on January 29, 2003, 01:22:02 pm
Media Center 9.0.105 beta is available.

Many things will crash and not work.  If that worries you, please wait for a couple of weeks.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90105.exe

Changes

1. Changed: When files are dragged to a CD burner drive, if at least one is a data file MC won't query for data or audio mode CD.
2. Fixed: Media Center was not able to send mp3 files as an email attachments.
3. NEW: Added Export To XML button to Library Manager
4. Fixed: Installing or restoring a license could cause mjextman.exe to hang in certain cases.
5. Fixed: If license install fails due to non-admin privilege, user is given error message to that effect.
6. Fixed: Added "Email files" and "Upload to FTP" to Send to menu
7. Fixed: Several CD-Text bugs. Particularly, artist names on a "per-track" basis weren't working.
8. Fixed: Erasing a CD-RW often resulted in an error message about "long operation in progress".
9. NEW: Added selection of appearance to InstallWizard.
10. Changed: Redesigned Library properties dialog.
11. NEW: Added lots of Hairstyle improvements -- thumbnails, alpha blending, sounds, etc. (still a work in progress)

We're still getting more bugs reported than we can fix each build. Please keep a list of bugs you find, and re-report anything that doesn't get fixed each build.

Thanks for your help and support.

9. NEW: Added selection of appearance to InstallWizard.

There didn't appear to be a "Skins Disabled" option in the new wizard screen.

New: The new library properties dialog has a disabled text entry field below the location that says either "C:\\Program Files\New Library" or "homecomputer.homenet.com:81" depeneding on the type.  Neither makes any sense to me at all.
New: If no changes are made to the library properties and you press OK, you get an error complaining that "a library already exists in this location".  It should just silently complete.

Here's a screenshot of the latest developments on Hairstyle:

There are instructions here:
http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=beta;action=display;num=1037138072

It's all xml-based so you can change it.

The lower left is Picture In Picture.

There's another important change.  You can now set the startup mode to "Hairstyle".

Too bad Mouseman's asleep.

Back again.

1) Audio analyzer still analyzing everything to 100%

Maybe I am the only one who is noticing this because I am ripping a lot of vinyl which generally seems to come in at less than 100% as opposed to CDs.

2) jpeg rotation just will not work.

I won't report these bugs again for a few builds as hopefully both the features will return as suddenly as they went.

Thanks

Love the installers ability to now ask which skin to use.

Seeing as your working on the installer PRETTY PLEASE make it so it will just install MJ and keep all the old file types that were pre-selected without us having to set them again each day.

Also - I REALLY think you should break it down into:
audio
- type 1
- type 2
- type 3
video
- type 1
- type 2
- type 3
graphic
- jpg
- gif
- bmp

etc just to make it really easy for people to quickly choose to associated MJ with each type of media.

I think you'd give yourself a lot of fans from doing it and also a lot of praise as being a responsible company to beginners by helping them out as much as possible.

I think adding a little wizard at the end for first time installers as well prompting them to set a few basic options for MJ without them having to delve into the options screen would also help you really make MJ work how people wanted it to individually right from the start.

how about a back button on the hairstyle. You go one area and you can't get back. The sounds in the hairstyles can be quite annoying when music is playing. Plus it acts really slow at times when clicking from one button to the next. A lot of the buttons don't seem to do anything either. It's a great idea though lots of potential.

Cannot install Watercolor MEGA-ME skins and many others.  I get a failed to install package message.

If it helps any, Amped and SonixMedia will actually install.

Windows ME:

Delete file from Hard Drive works perfectly now!!

Remaining Bugs:

1.  Still cannot customize toolbar  (Works fine on Windows NT)

2.  When I try to rip a data  (mp3) CD, it appears to be  copying the mp3 files to the CD, but after its finished, I get an "illegal mode for this track" error message at the end, and an empty CD.  (Haven't tried this on Windows NT)

3. Tekno Mega skin, when MC is fully expanded, is slightly cut off at the top  (the top of the jukebox in the left hand corner is missing, as is the very top of the words "Media Center" right next to it.  Nothing major, just thought I'd include it though...

4.  Not sure if this is a bug or not, maybe its a feature request:  When I click on the "Name" field when I have a smartlist open, it automatically alphabetizes all the songs--I love this feature.  However, I can't save it  (the alphabetical order). When I select "all" songs, and right click, I get a menu with "update order" on it--I click on this, and the songs go back to how they were originally  (the default appears to be the time in which they were placed in the smartlist, with earlier songs being first.)  If I don't click on it, the songs revert back to the default.  Is there some way to update the order so that MC will save the songs in alphabetical order in a smartlist, or is there some way to change the default so that it would be in alphabetical order, rather than by the time and date the song was placed in the smartlist  (which would be preferable to me)?  Some of my smartlists are large  (I'm more of a "lumper" rather than a "splitter"),  and if I could keep the songs in alphabetical order, it would make them easier to find on my ipod  (Granted, I usually use shuffle mode, but I usually will want to hear a particular song first).  Maybe there is a way to do this and I'm missing it  (perhaps there is a command I can put in the smartlist itself??)?

]Addendum:  Phydeaux set me straight on the "sort=name" command in the smartlists, so number 4 is more an issue of my lack of intelligence rather than an issue with MC 9

All in all, very nice progress!!

The artist are still being listed as "Various" on an audio CD burned from an MP3 list comprised of several different artist.  When the playlist contains only one artist  on all the tracks, the artist name is burned correctly.  Thank you, Joe Karnes

1. No desktop icon
2. JRiver folder in programs menu is empty

The first two might seem trivial, but don't they show that there's something wrong with the instal procedures?

3. Audio burn fails with DAO problem
4. No volume slider
5. Ctrl++ inoperative
6. Ctrl+- inoperative
7. Ctrl+M inoperative
8. No toolbar customisation as there are no buttons     available
9. Was'nt there an option to change the burn software in settings? It does'nt show here any more.
10. Edit in properties is unbelievably slow

Since these problems have been there for about the last 8 or so releases, it's getting a bit tedious to think that there seems to be a lot of effort going into cosmetic changes whilst basic functions like the above are left outstanding ........

The "amped" skin is awesome!

1)When Mega-Me windows is Maximized the "Maximize" button in the right upper corner DOES NOT change to "restore" button.

2) MC9 still caches every song I ever played or burned in the Media Library.  It would be nice to at least have an option to disable it:  After playing a stream from an internet radiostation I have entries for the first song in the list as well as one entry for each time I was redirected to another server.  Also all the songs from a CD I don't even have anymore.

3)Clicking a ***.rm link downloads the file instead of streaming it.  If I cut and paste the link in to "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

4)Clicking on a ***.ram link does nothing.  Again, if I cut and paste it into "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

BOTH file types are registered under MC9 in IE Folder options.

5)The Playlist scrol bar does not scroll in Min-Me skins

6) Noise, with Replay Gain enabled, in songs that are recorded at HIGHER volume than playlist average.  Clip protection is enabled.  Restarting the song usually eliminates the problem.

7)If you check the remember volume setting option; MC9 does not reset it back to pre-MC9 level when the program is closed.

8 ) While the scroll bars in the mega-me main window are fixed the scroll bars under options dialog box are still erratic.

Great product over all!

Lots more features then WMP9, but less intuitive/more difficult for novices interface.

I think there should be a plug-in for Real Media and Quick time so that users are not forced to download those players.  Bad enough, we all have put up with WMP.  It does not make sence to have 4 media players; especially considering that most of them are pretty intrusive, difficult to remove, and attempt to set themselves as the DEFAULT player.

BTW, if one uses MC9 the contents of C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player (not the directory itself) can be safely removed.  This leaves all the core WMP9 code intact.  Just erases some of the player interface.

I also erased everything in the Real One directory EXCEPT for the 'rpplugins'.  And so far MC9 handles the Real Media Content pretty well this way.

Also, still more buggy then the late WMP9 betas were. Though, with a new build every day the bugs are addressed pretty quicly.  I wonder..., when is the final viersion going to be released?

:)

MC 9.0.105
*OLD
- Auto Smartlist "Top Hits -- haven't heard for over a year" doesn't order by numberplays, so it really doesn't show any "Top Hits". Same issue for "Top Hits -- listened to today"
- Installer doesn't remove old install entries in add/remove programs. (Media jukebox entry)
- When importing mp3 files, the track# tag rewrites from 01 to 1...and no way to automatically add 0x
- Media Center is named Media Jukebox in Task Manager - Processes
- Shift-Deleting a file in Playing Now reorders the list after the current sorting order

Before:
9 Delerium Enchanted
5 Delerium Silence
1 Depeche Mode Somebody

After:
1 Delerium Enchanted
2 Delerium Silence
3 Depeche Mode Somebody

- Shift-Deleting (delete from hd checked) bugged. The player pane shows Media Center 9.0 and "buffering..." It seems that MC loses focus on which file is currently playing and especially which song comes next. The sound hangs in the end of currently playing track. If you stop and play again, you get the "Please select file to play" dialog.
EDIT: Please note that the currently playing song is NOT the same that's been deleted

- Wheel-scrolling in any list doesn't use system settings. Instead it always scroll 1 line at a time (my system setting is 3 lines to speed things up), causing scrolling through long lists a minor pain

File | email now works for me, using Incredimail as my mail program and Opera as browser.

Editing file properties now works smoothly.

Burning CDs with several artists still lists artists as Various.

Even with set to clear recently imported file list, this does not clear.

Audio analyzing still defaults to 100%

Bugs:
1. After just one data CD-RW burn, MC still (100% of the time) locks/blocks all access to CD-RW and CD-R drives on the PC...MC nor Windows Explorer recognize the any CD inserted in the the drive(s).  Simply, stop and restart MC and drive access is back to normal.  If someone at JRiver want to send me a test utility or something to test this condition for them, please do (send it).

2. Erased a CD-RW and MC took a full minute *after* the erase finished (CD-RW ejected) to display the "Erase complete." dialog.  Can't MC display this immediately after finishing (ejecting)...MC has to know it's complete if it knew to eject the CD.

Request:
1. New toolbar icons that function like the Favorites icon (with a drop-down list) for Locate File... and Tools... options (off the track right-click menu)...two new toolbar icons.  This would provide more direct support for these options.  Maybe a feature where the last selection option is always at the top with a separator bar under it (followed by the rest of the list)...like Send To's popup menu.

BUG: Still getting "Various" as artist names for compilation CDs on a "per track" basis.

Oops!  :-[
A component (cdmanager.dll) failed to make it into last night's build. Sorry about that. Please try the next build and the "per track" artists should come out right.

For the CD's you burned with last nights build, if you delete them from MC's database, then re-insert them with the next build installed, it will read the artists correctly.

Windows ME:
2.  When I try to rip a data  (mp3) CD, it appears to be  copying the mp3 files to the CD, but after its finished, I get an "illegal mode for this track" error message at the end, and an empty CD.  (Haven't tried this on Windows NT)
I assume you are burning a CD rather than ripping. Could you post your system info (from MC's help menu)? Is the CD really empty, or is it partially written so it's unusable afterwards? Have you tried reading the burned CD after restarting MC (or rebooting)?

Thanks!

It just keeps getting more stable, and I can be very demanding on my system, but MC9 just keeps trudging along, very nice.

An update on my RAM situation...I'm the one who has been monitoring this since .98, when RAM usage went through the roof. After installing .101 when RAM usage on my dedicated MC system was at 104M, I then updated the library and checked "remove files which do not exist". This brought the RAM down to about 78M, so keep those libraries clean. Now, in .105, my RAM has dropped to about 73M, and this is after adding to my library and assigning a lot of album art, so the RAM situation is getting better. I realize that MC9's ability to be much faster than other progs with my size library has to do with the RAM consumption, but 73M is still a hog for most people who will not be running a dedicated system as I am.

Also confirming:

1. Some skins won't load (although "amped" loaded fine)

2. Analyzer still giving everything 100%. This has been present since .99, maybe even .98

Thanks guys, very nice work, love hairstyle but is the name final? I'm bald for pete's sake! :D

Yes--trying to burn my mp3's to CD to back them up--my bad, I was tired when I was typing that....Thanks for the response--I'll put my system menu up later  (I'm at my office until later this afternoon).

I didn't try completely rebooting, but when I closed/restarted MC, the burned CD appears empty on the tree.  The first time I tried it, I think MC put something on the CD, because it was unusable, but nothing showed up on the tree.  I tried it again, with a fresh CD for giggles, and on the second try, I don't think it did anything--I think the CD was untouched. What is so weird about it is that it really looked like all the data was copying, then at the end I got that error message....

And thanks again Phydeaux for smartlist help...

Hello,

"Please keep a list of bugs you find, and re-report anything that doesn't get fixed each build. "

Where? Here...?

When inserting a first CD I get normal CDDB info.
When inserting a 2nd CD, after trying to connect with
CDDB I get some error 'due to CD-status'.
When inserting a 3rd CD, I get the same error.

When inserting the 2nd CD,but using another ripper,
such as Audiograbber, I get correct CDDB-info.

Then re-inserting the 2nd CD whilst using MC9, I get
the correct CDDB-info.

Closing MC9 and re-starting does not change anything,
during the first session.

This has happened quite a lot of times whilst using MC9.
(the MC9-version prior to 105)

Donot know whether this 'bug' is fixed in 105. Still have to install this version.

Any idea???

rgds/Marcel Wulffraat.

It appears some of the mega me skins are failing because MC is trying to install them in the mini skins diriectory.  After trying to install Watercolour and being told it had failed I was left with watercolour folders in my miniskins directory even tho these are MEGA ME skins...

Hope this helps...

THIS WOULD BE FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!  I have to keep specifying the proper checkboxes each install and this would be a tremendous help!!

Bugs still present:

1) I still don't get the ö, é, è etc. Is this just my problem? Because from some other reactions I see that they do not have that problem. I hadn't this problem up til version 0080 or something like that.
Jim/Matt: please react.

2) When sending a mp3 to the Media Editor, I don't get further than the Decoding-box, which doesn't do anything. Was good before version 0080 (or something like that)

3) Slide bars don't work (well) in various playlists. Also: if the slider works, it isn't quick enough. Very annoying!

4) if you want to drag a file within a playlist, the screen runs from the end to the beginning.
I'll try to explain it a bit: if you have, say, 300 files in a playlist and you want to put number 300 to number 80: when you start dragging you're at position number 1 within 1 second. Some quick jerking with the mouse is required to get to the number 80 position

Title: Re: Media Center 9.0.105 beta

Bugs:
1. When using Windows Explorer and the shell extension to 'Add to Playing Now' (right-click menu), if MC is not started at the time...the track(s) are not added to Playing Now (MC starts and that's it).

2. When playing .AVIs and MC finishes playing a track or AVI and switching to playing a new AVI, the output video window always shows the video in the upper lefthand corner.  You have to resize or change the output window (full, windowed, internal) to 'wakeup' MC and get the video output centered/displayed correctly.

Are you viewing the contents of the CD in Media Center or in windows explorer? Remember that in Media Center when you click on the CD in the tree, only the top level files are displayed, so only the playlist.m3u file would be displayed. You have to expand the tree item to see the mp3 files, since they are in sub-folders.

I've looked at the contents in both, tried expanding the folder--there's no mp3s in it, and the disc itself shows only the size of the mp3 playlist folder  (meaning there's not like 500,000 mb of data on the disc--only the size of the relatively small playlist folder).

RAM update:

MC actually uses less memory the more I use it. When first loading MC, the RAM usage is still nearly 100M with a clean and tidy library, but after a bunch of regular functions (playlisting, organizing, tagging) during the course of the day the usage goes down almost 25%. So if I leave it on all night, will it actually put two more RAM strips in my empty slots while I sleep? ;D

Introduzione: Andante non troppo; Al" fill the name field with the filename rather than the title from the tag. Not sure what the pattern is.  Perhaps you have a limit on the number of characters in a title that is too small.

b. When reading artist, if TPE2 contains data, artist is filled with data from TPE2.  If TPE2 is blank, then artist is filled with data from TPE1.  You should be consistent.  Artist should always correspond to data from TPE1.

c. Reading track numbers with leading zeros ("01") truncates the zeros.  If I later use MC to change file properties, the leading zero is lost. Would like to keep the leading zeros.

2. When watching TV and clicking on the "Channels <<" button: it removes the list of channels and increases the size of the display properly. However, it does not remove the channel scroll bar. The scroll bar sits in the middle of the picture.

3. Display image. If I enter a path to my own image for use instead of the J River logo, the J River logo still appears on Track Info screens.  The logo should be replaced with my image.

Requests

a. Other tags: Higher priority: Add database fields for TPE2 (Band/Orchestra), TPE3 (conductor/performer refinement), and TIT1 (Content Group Description). Lower priority: also add TKEY, TPE4, TIT3, TPUB

b. Incorporate online TV guide such as Gemstar GuidePlus+

Man this is frustrating...I actually got one disc burned with mp3 files  (It must have been a fluke), but now everytime I try to burn my MP3's to CD, I get this message in the status area at the end of the burn:  "Illegal mode for this track".  This is despite a normal test mode; MC9 looks like it is copying the files, but I keep getting that message at the end, and a useless disc--nothing I can detect on it, no playlists or anything, but the disc is now unwritable.

Everything looks like its queued up fine, and it looks like each file is copying, but I wind up with the dreaded "Illegal mode for this track"  message.  Darn, I thought it was working too--any thoughts??  Anything that I could be doing wrong??

Options - File Associations:

Setting is not sticking when MC is closed and reopened if all files are selected and or unselected.  The settings are sticking if only up to approximately 1/2 of the file types have been enabled.  The .mpl, .rmj, and .rmx file types, if unchecked, will always be checked on returning to MC.

hello:
first at all, congratulations for mj v9. It's working "almost" perfectly, but i can deal with some of their "time to time errors".
But i've noticed one thing that i want to  know why happen :
when analyze audio, it analyze all, but it doesn't appear the replay gain.  ?

One question: what's the difference between autorip and click on start?. I've just ripped 2 cd's and i've done one in each way but haven't noticed any difference

One suggestion: It could be possible for you create an autosmartlist who is more or less something like this: One random song by each band and/or record.
I'll love this feature 'cause i like to do mp3 compilations for my car, and if i only want one song by band i've to do it manually. (No, i don't use rating, i have too many songs to rate). Isuppose that it hasn't to be very hard for you to write the rules for this, but i only can do it if i choose the same #track and it is not the best way to do comps  :)
Too i'd like to know about two requests that i did some time ago.
One was about change the display of date imported to year/month/day (i find no use in the actual display), and the other was about the possibility of some smart top-hits where we could set the top hits for each moth (for exemple).
Is there some possibility that some of these things go into final V9?

Bug in Analyze Audio.

If I select a few thousand files to analyze it starts to fail after about one thousand. Once this has happened, exiting out of the analyze audio module causes a crash in MC9.

This happens on two different WinXP machines.

Bug

You remove the play arrow from the media library icon.  However, if I go to customize toolbar then play arrow is still there...change the icon here too.

Information Dialog Box:  When uploading files to my iPod, several files did not transfer (I haven't resolved that issue). The subesquent dialog box informing me of the problem was "too wide" for my screen (it extended beyond the visible portion of the program). I could not resize it. At the time I am using the Z Lite skin in the Mega Me mode (could the skin be the problem?).

Just skipped from 9.0.84 to 9.0.105 - wow, many changes, and I seem to be able to burn with no problems now - yeeehah!

Dont think this is really a bug, but...

I really like the new tooltips with the thumbnail of the album cover, which dont take up half the screen like the old ones. But they appear as a borderless grey on my unskinned MC - they are difficult to spot and tend to merge into the background. My WinXP is configured to show the standard 'post-it' yellow with a border. Can MC default to WinXP tooltip settings when unskinned? Or at least make them stand out a bit more?

Pause is still not working.  If I pause a song for more than 10 minutes, MC hangs when I try to play again.

You can't have both installed at the same time. Neither will work properly.

Uninstall both, reboot, and reinstall the one you want to keep.

With AutoRip there is less "clicking" that you need to do. After a CD is finished, it just waits for you to put in the next CD, you don't need to click on anything. If you have multiple CD drives, you can just keep loading and unloading them until you're done.
We'll be changing it soon, so that AutoRip is the normal mode.

I just installed MC 9 and it works really well, but I was wondering if there is any consideration going into reorganizing the library in a way similar to how Winamp 3 or iTunes work, rather than using an Explorer like tree view to sort through songs they use 3 windows one to select an artist and then another to select from a list of available albums and then the last window shows that albums tracks.  This is a much cleaner and faster way of dealing with libraries of several thousand tracks as opposed to having to keep moving down in a tree and then close it so not to clutter up the screen.
Are there skins/plugins that can do this?
