Title: Ripping from CD, finding no tag information
Post by: gt93grad on August 26, 2024, 03:52:47 pm
This has been going on for some time, and I'm no longer find any tag information for any CD I rip. Everything is "unknown".  And I have a good internet connection since I can access Amazon for cover art, and any other online site.  I have to type the information manually, and that's obviously a pain.

What version of MC are you using?

I've experienced the same thing, and it's been over the last few versions of MC (including MC 33). I have the impression "no tag information" most affects recent releases, and that it's about what's in (or not in) the YADB database, rather than the version of MC.  In general, I don't find YADB provides consistent satisfactory results in comparison to automatic lookup info generated by, for example, iTunes.

And now it seems to be even worse.  Now I can insert a new CD, and it keeps asking me if I want to re-rip.  It still think I have the previous CD in the drive.  I can reboot or restart MC and "sometimes" that clears it, but not often.  Has anyone heard from JRiver on this?  How to give them a heads up?

I often see the same thing lately when the CD stops spinning after initial insertion into the drive.  If nothing at all shows, then most of the time, actually starting the rip and then canceling it brings up tracks and tags that were read by MC but not displayed.  When tracks are listed but tags are unpopulated, the other thing that very often helps is hitting the button "Update from Online Database" in the rip window.  Is that button accessing YADB or additional external sources?

A workaround to avoid lots of hand entries in failed cases is to select all tracks and type in just the basic information, like album name and artist.  After the rip, jump over to M3ptag and select Tag Sources > Discogs Artist + Album, or one of the other Tag Source options (that choice works best for me).  Pick an acceptable match from the popup (hopefully Discogs found something) and hit OK to populate tags.  This works for most of my albums.  You may need to first set up a tag template in Mp3tag - not sure, since I always use one.
