Title: JRiver (as Media Server) & Lumin (as streamer), no DSD playback
Post by: KuK on November 16, 2024, 11:24:26 pm
I can't believe this is not possible. But on the other hand there are so many settings in JRiver and I personally couldn't make it work.

JRiver 33 on Dell laptop, on the home network as wired, external SSD attached to laptop via USB, all my music files on it. Flac files and DSD files. JRiver set up to share the library (on SSD attached).
Lumin D2 on the same home network. Lumin app sees the JRiver library no problem. And plays the flacs no problem, but not the DSDs.

The Lumin plays the DSD files if the SSD library is attached directly to the back of the Lumin usb. But not thru JRiver from laptop.

I would guess a DSD to PCM "conversion on the fly" or similar would be needed from JRiver. But I did not see anything like this in the settings of JRiver.

Anybody ran into similar problems?

Thanks.

Some devices have different capabilities, depending on how they are connected.

MC can convert (or not) depending on how it's set.

I don't see anywhere in the settings of JRiver a DSD to PCM (or any other format) to convert.

Conversion from DSD to PCM is automatic if DSD bitstreaming isn't enabled. Check the audio path to see what's being outputted.

Thanks I will.
To clarify somehow, the laptop where JR is installed PLAYS the DSD files being on the laptop, so music is coming out from laptop speakers.
On the same network I have a Lumin D2 streamer. And this Lumin is taking the music files (for playing) from the above laptop with JR configured as music server. Now, in this case the DSD music files from my laptop are unable to be played back (by Lumin in this case). It plays flac aiff etc just not dsd.
The problem might not be JR, I was just asking the possible pros here.
Thanks again.

Laptop typically do not playback DSD to their own speakers. DSD is probably being converted to PCM. You can check that in Audio Path.

From the Lumin, are you connected to MC acting as a DLNA server? If so, which one? In Tools - Options - Media Network you can set up that DLNA server. For the server to send DSD to the client (Lumin) the DLNA server needs to be set to Original Format or Convert Only When Necessary with DSD set to not convert DSD.

Can you send audio from MC to the Lumin via DLNA? Does that play DLNA?

I have to report a success over here.
As a side note, as it is configured, JRiver plays dsd music thru the Dell laptop speakers. Not bad, although not the biggest thing needed to be solved.
Yes, the problem was at Tools - Options - Media Network, where Audiophile 24-bit DAC was initially active. I added both Generic DNLA or Legacy UPNP and either of them are working now.
Thanks very much.
Next step is to figure out some things on JRemote, now plays only one song from playlist and stops. Even though play all is selected. Probably my mistake somewhere.

Glad it is working.

When playing DSD to your laptop speakers did you check Audio Path to see if it is converting to PCM?

Yes, there is a dsd to pcm conversion in the Audio Path.
