Windows => JRiver Media Center 33 for Windows => Topic started by: kritike24 on December 22, 2024, 01:53:18 pm

i have a windows 11 vm setup on proxmox that has jriver mc installed and acts as the jriver server.
i use another pc on the same network that conects to that library via access key and acts as the client. (NUC11ATKC4)
with the client pc i notice jriver freezes alot and crashes to the point it is not usable.
first and foremost is this scenario ideal? what if i made the client pc the server and main player? i have sonos speakers around the house that would act as clients as well.
if i were to use one pc as server and main player it would have to be this NUC11ATKC4.....unless you provide me an amazon link to another pc
edit 1 : all media files are on a nas on the local network as well that is where the library pulls the files from

I run my server in a similar way (VM on unraid server) though in my case the storage is "local" (as the VM is on the nas) and clients all use the local media option so they access files directly without going through the server. This works fine.
-
If it's freezing, that could be a sign of network slowness, e.g. with the NAS trying to load data, it may not be fast enough to handle some workloads.
-
I forgot to mention that the client is directly connected to the nas and shares so it should be playing files directly and not going to jriver server. Unless i have to set a setting for this?
I can also verify no slowness on network i was leaning towards it being the computer hard ware on the client

Well, anything over the network is going to have a speed limit, which is going to depend on the connections and equipment used within the network (NAS, router, etc). I would recommend at least 1 gigabit ethernet being used as much as possible, especially between the NAS and the server Media Center is running on. But even then there may be moments where Media Center is trying to load data from the NAS and it appears to "freeze" or lock up until it can finish doing so.
Commonly this is the cause of Media Center freezing or locking up or becoming unresponsive when using a NAS, a network bottleneck occurs and the NAS isn't able to send data fast enough so Media Center is waiting for the task to finish so it becomes unresponsive waiting for it to finish. Which if that happens you should never close Media Center, let it sit and finish its task and it should become responsive again.
There is more to it of course, like how the drives in the NAS are configured which are going to determine the maximum speed possible from the NAS to the Media Center server, and other things of course.
-
I understand, but would the client pc model i listed be okay to use to connect to server but be directly connected to nas where files are?
-
Well, yeah, it's a NUC, lots of people use those as MC servers. Basically you connect the NUC to your router/modem (the one connected to the NAS) via ethernet if possible, then mount the NAS in the OS on the NUC (I really would recommend Windows if you've never used Linux before and don't know how to mount shares via fstab or anything) then connect MC to it. Make sure your library matches the mounted NAS and its locations and make sure all files are available and you're good to go.
If you don't want to have a display, keyboard or mouse connected setup a remote desktop solution and you can access it from another PC.

The nuc i listed would be a client
I already have server setup as a vm on prox

I forgot to mention that the client is directly connected to the nas and shares so it should be playing files directly and not going to jriver server. Unless i have to set a setting for this?
Media Network > Client Options > Play local file if one matches
check this and it will play it directly
-
Ah yes thats right.
-
So even with that option enabled still freezing
-
What type of file(s) are you playing? What's the relative filesize(s)?

Please share details of your Promox and VM set-up including,
- Hypervisor's CPU details
- Hypervisor's RAM
- How is storage shared - NFS, SMB etc?
- Guest VM's CPU allocation
- Guest VM's RAM allocation
- Guest VM's storage type (spinning, SSD etc)
I have not used Promox, but for years ran FreeNAS / TrueNAS for the hypervisor and storage and then vmWare for the hypervisor, virtualising TrueNas for storage and a debian VM for Media Centre. For that set-up the following worked well (guests running on SSD with adequate vCPU and RAM provided significant performance improvements)
- Hypervisor: reliable SSD for OS
- Hypervisor: CPU with sufficient number of cores
- Hypervisor: Lots of RAM
- Hypervisor: SSD for guest VMs OS and app installation and spinning disk for media storage
- Guest: multiple vCPU and more than the minimum RAM allocation for the OS
From an investigation perspective
- perform some iperf tests between client and server to confirm network throughput is OK
- outside of Media Centre, transfer some files from server to client to see what the storage is doing
-
There are a few NAS problems in this thread: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,24031.350.html

steve mac see below screenshots

awesome donkey, the files in question have been mp3 320kbps like 5-12 mb a file
id like to play flac and mp3s

just an fyi...i think i fixed the problem and if this makes sense as to why jriver as a client kept freezing not responsive slow then it was my fault lol
i have no idea why i set it up like this but i have been doing it for all my clients....
the server obviously needs media network enabled
on the clients i was adding the media server library with access key and then i went into the settings on the client and enabled media server as well....... so the client was connected to my media server and i made it a media server as well
i ended up upgrading that old nuc to something a bit more powerful thinking it was the hardware, but now just realized maybe that was my issue above. if that makes sense why jriver was acting up then user error lol thanks !
