Title: JRiver Hang When Adding Library
Post by: adiebear on January 02, 2025, 01:52:22 pm
Help please!
I'm using MC29 and when I try to add a library on 1 PC from another- using either the access key or URL - MC won't respond It hangs even before a password request pops up.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled, rebooted both machines, several times.

Hang?  Unresponsive?

Firewall.

More details might help.

Thanks Boss. Yes, unresponsive, with the only option being to close the program.. waiting doesn't help.
I changed credentials (password), rebooted. The credentials request is repeated over and over.
I have just allowed Media Center Extenders through the firewall.
I don't know what other details to supply
Authentication and other boxes are ticked. I have read through various how-tos.

Firewall.  Antivirus.

Windows firewall is off.
ESET NOD32 antivirus. Fiddled with the settings. Disabled/enabled device control, added the URL as an allowed address, excluded JRiver exe in excluded apps, even though this makes no sense to me...
Fiddling with MC settings allows me to play on the PC I am trying to load the library on to the PC with the library I am trying to load :)
I am playing local files off a portable external drive.

Edit: Several restarts later, all is well. I had successfully loaded the library a couple of weeks ago, when I went away, then found it was no longer working, since the other machine was offline.

Which leads to a follow-up query: Is it possible to use the desired library when the other machine is off?

In response to your question, the media "server" (the device that "IS" the library) must be on and accessible in order for the "client" (the device that wants to use the server's library) to be able to connect to that library to play from it.

Thank you. I thought as much, but was hoping nonetheless, as there are severe thunderstorms where I live, so I disconnect everything when away.

If you want to consistently rely on a server/client setup like you're trying, both must be on. Maybe an investment in one or more UPS and a whole home surge protector would be a wise one. Alternatively, you'd need to have the 20 TB library copied to both locations so that it could be used locally (not shared) but this would result in different libraries as you add/edit/remove movies/music.

I'd opt for copying. This ? https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=137825.0 (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=137825.0)

The copy function could absolutely be used BUT both the server pc and the client pc would have to be powered up and connected AND you would need storage space for the copied files at the client pc site. If the copying is done with the two pcs in different locations you might have to pay for all the internet traffic for the files to be copied (unless you have no data limits in your internet coverage).

Once this copying has been done, you would have two separate libraries so you might have to manually sync them after the fact whenever you add/edit/remove files to/from your preferred library. I just clued in  that I mentioned a 20 TB library in error based on my confusing this thread with another one so apologies for any confusion that may have caused.

Are the server and client within the same network? If so it'd probably be more simple to get a NAS and use that to put all the files on and connect it to both PCs and use MC on both. It's much more simple than having to copy everything from one to the other and keeping it in sync, with a NAS it's in one location accessible from both.

Use Windows Defender. Uninstall ESET.  Use Windows Defender only. Configure it.
