Title: Data Base Problem
Post by: nyc-ink on January 26, 2003, 03:47:56 pm
Hey Guys.
There is a problem with the data base, certain files will just not show up under the artists name.  As I've looked for certain songs under the artists name I've noticed songs are missing  When I do a search on the song title I find the song, it even says who the artist is, even after dragging the file from the search list to the artists group the file still does not appear.

Another thing I've noticed is frequently when clicking on an artist group the songs don't appear in alphabetical order based on the title?  These doesn't seem to happen for all artists just some.

I noticed if there is no "Artist" defined for a file, all the other files with "Artist" do not show up in the tree. This happens for ape/apl files for me. I don't know about the other types.

I have the same problem as nyc-ink.  No matter what I do, I cannot make certain files show up under "Artist".  I take a track that does show up, copy the artist name from it, and paste it into the "problem track", but it doesn't help.

I have this problem with hundreds of tracks (maybe 5% of total) under MJ9, and never had this problem with MJ8 AFAIK.

It might help if you posted your system info and the exact version of MC that you're using.

You may want to try a newer beta version.

Is it possible that on the tracks that aren't showing up in the artist list you've possible entered something in the Album Artist field, as opposed to just the Artist field?  In some View Schemes this changes the way tracks are listed.

Well updated to the latest build, problem still there.  Certain files are still not appearing under their artist's group.  A few other points.  You should be able to start up in any part of the "tree".  I like to start Atrist/Album group, but it's not one of the choices in start up options.  Also it sucks that in upgrading I lost all my play lists, which I took many, many hours creating.

Condolences, Brian.  Sorry for your loss.  Really.

Are any of your files read only?

Hey Jim
Not read only.  I haven't gone through my entire collection, over 4000 files.  So I don't really know what's not showing up and what is.  So far I have found two files that "refuse" to show up in their artists lists, btw the album doesn't show up in the group either.

This does stink if you have a lot of time put into playlists'. While it may not help this time, you can and should export your playlists from MC into another folder while checking out the betas. MC does do this. It will save some headaches if it happens again.

Well I did do a backup before upgrading, and did a restore but it didn't restore my play lists.  Frankly this reminds me of the early days fo MS Office upgrades when one verion couldn't read past version's files.  I'm considering going back to MJ and waiting before I upgrade to 9

Well, that's up to you. Back up of library is only for files in the library. At least that's what I've found over time. If you click on File you can see the export playlist. You can save them in several formats.

Please send that backup to matt @ jriver.com and we'll see why playlists aren't coming through.

Thanks for your help.

Files sent, the main problem frankly is not my play lists, the main problem is songs not appearing under artist's groups despite the fact that they are properly listed with the artist's name.
